DUNDAS, ON — Spun Sugar landed in the toughest of three Trillium Series divisions at Flamboro Downs on Saturday, but Bradley Grant and Ben Wallace are looking at the tough competition as an opportunity rather than an obstacle.

Grant purchased the two-year-old pacing filly out of the Summer Sizzler Sale on Aug. 26, and Saturday’s contest will her first start under Wallace’s tutelage.

“It will give us a chance to race her and see how she does,” says Grant. “She’s in pretty tough, but you never know, racing is a funny game.”

The Milton residents went to the sale in London last weekend hoping to acquire the daughter of Camluck and Landfair Caveat. They liked her racelines — she has won two Grassroots divisions and never finished worse than fifth in eight starts — and her breeding — her full siblings include $447,157 winner Cupcakesnwhipcream and $181,289 winner Caviarandsoftmusic.

“We both kind of took a liking to her, and obviously she was coming from a good stable,” says Grant about the filly, who learned her early lessons from trainer Carl Jamieson. “Ben had a good look at her at the sale and he liked her, then we were lucky enough to be the successful bidders.”

Spun Sugar sold near the end of the 184 horse sale and Grant speculates the long day may have resulted in the filly’s relatively modest $53,000 price tag.

“She’s a two-year-old, she’s got good breeding and she’s got a lot of racing ahead of her. I don’t think we can go wrong,” speculates the longtime owner. “I actually thought we got her at a very reasonable price. We were surprised.”

Spun Sugar will have an opportunity to repay some of her purchase price from Post 5 in the first of three $26,411 Trillium divisions on Saturday. The winner of $44,368 and driver Mario Baillargeon face off against a talent laden field dominated by reigning Gold Final champion Canadette, who will start from the advantageous Post 1 in her first race off a three-week hiatus.

In addition to Canadette, Race 2 also features two-time Grassroots winner Ja El Cash Advance from Post 2, three-time Grassroots winner Secret Grin from Post 4 and American-bred Yankee Augusta, a third-place finisher in the Aug. 19 Eternal Camnation and a 1:55.3 winner at Mohawk Racetrack on Aug. 10, from Post 6.

Open to fillies owned exclusively by Ontario residents, Saturday’s Trillium event features 15 Ontario-sired youngsters and four American-breds.

The first of three Trillium Series events on the freshman pacing filly schedule, Saturday’s event features the dynamic youngsters in Races 2, 4 and 6. Post time at the lightning fast Flamboro Downs oval is 4 pm.
