CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — A snappy :27.1 final quarter propelled Darren McCall and two-year-old pacing filly Ice Ice Baby to an impressive victory in the second of two $40,000 Gold Eliminations at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening.

Starting from Post 2, McCall settled his novice pacer into the second spot as Mother Hen bustled out to a :27.3 opening quarter. Shuffled back to third when fan favourite Western Dancing took control of the race heading by the :57.4 half, and then to fourth as the leader faced pressure by Tiz To Dream heading for the 1:27 three-quarters, McCall exercised patience.

As the leaders straightened out at the top of the stretch, McCall gave Ice Ice Baby a clear run to the finish and the Modern Art daughter sprinted home to a one length victory in 1:55. Tiz To Dream delivered a game effort up the outside to finish second, while Windsong Grand Ave recovered from an early break — that saw her last sitting through the first half of the race — and rocketed down the stretch into third. Fourth and fifth-place finishers St Lads Trixie and Precious Cammill also advanced to the July 20 Gold Final.

McCall shares ownership on Ice Ice Baby with his wife Annette Karina Johansen through their Living Our Dreams stable. The filly prepared for Monday’s Ontario Sires Stakes outing with a July 4 qualifier at Mohawk, where she circled the Campbellville oval alone on the front end in 2:00.3.

A $9,000 purchase out of the Forest City Yearling Sale last fall, Ice Ice Baby now seems like a genuine bargain as she banked $20,000 in her first lifetime start. The filly is the sixth foal from 100 per cent producing mare Black Ice, whose offspring include $100,000-plus winners Village Blizzard and Village Blast.

Striking Terror claimed the victor’s spoils in the first Gold Elimination, stalking Lily Ellie through fractions of :27.4, :57 and 1:27.1 before slipping out of the pocket in the stretch and pacing away to a one length victory in 1:55.2. Fan favourite Lily Ellie had to settle for second, with FBs Terror circling three-wide at the three-quarter pole to get up for third. Mobro Flirt and Miss All Fun rounded out the field for the $130,000 Gold Final.

Milton resident Randy Waples engineered Striking Terror’s victory for trainer Travis Alexander and owner Fiddlers Creek Stables L of West Bloomfield, MI. Alexander qualified the Western Terror daughter twice at Michigan’s Hazel Park before shipping into Mohawk for a July 6 qualifier that saw her stop the teletimer at 1:59.1.

Purchased for $15,000 at the 2008 Lexington Select Sale, Striking Terror is the third foal from broodmare E Ts Camille, who earned $167,094 in her racing career.

The freshman pacing fillies will return to Mohawk Racetrack next Monday, July 20 for their first $130,000 Gold Final, with the field ranged along the starting gate as follows:
