DUNDAS, ON — Flamboro Downs opens its 2007 Ontario Sires Stakes season on Wednesday, June 27 with eight Grassroots divisions for the impressive three-year-old pacing fillies.

A total of $120,000 will be on the line at the Dundas oval and trainer Duane Marfisi is hoping that Crazy She Calls Me can bounce back from a foot infection to grab a share of the provincial prize money.

“She hasn’t been good lately,” admits the Guelph resident, who trains Crazy She Calls Me for his partners Offshore Racing of Burlington, Aaron Waxman of Brantford and Alan Alber of Thornhill. “She had a pus pocket pop out and I don’t know if it’s quite healed up or not.”

Crazy She Calls Me began her sophomore campaign on an impressive note, capturing her first three starts, including a division of the Grassroots season opener at Georgian Downs on May 22. Her foot troubles emerged just in time for the June 8 Trillium event at Western Fair Raceway where she finished fifth. Marfisi worked on the foot for two weeks and then gave the filly a test run at Mohawk Racetrack on June 21, but he was not satisfied with the seventh-place result.

“I raced her last night (June 21) to try and tighten her up, but I don’t know if it was a good idea,” explains the horseman. “So I’ll draw a blood on her, and scope her, and see if she’s good to go for Wednesday.”

Compounding the Mach Three daughter’s problems are her post, she will start from Post 6 in the sixth race on Wednesday, and the competition. Among the fillies Crazy She Calls Me and driver Rick Zeron will face is top Grassroots competitor Spun Sugar from Post 3.

“She’ll jog Saturday, be off Sunday and train Monday,” says Marfisi. “And we’ll go from there, I’ll cross my fingers.”

After one Grassroots event Crazy She Calls Me currently shares top spot in the standings with the other six division winners from May 22. Favoured to make a leap to the top of the standings after Wednesday’s contest is Secret Grin, who is undefeated through her last three starts, the most recent a 1:55 tour around Flamboro in her June 17 Flamboro Breeders Stakes split.

Bruce MacDonald trains Secret Grin for Mardon Stables of Loretto and Randy Fritz will steer her from Post 5 in Wednesday’s fourth race.

The other division winners from May 22, Lovely Astro, Twin B Diva and Northern Blue, will try and keep the point race a close one from Post 4 in Race 4, Post 5 in Race 8 and Post 1 in the eleventh race.

Post time at Flamboro Downs on Wednesday, June 27 is 6 pm, with the three-year-old pacing fillies set to take the stage in Races 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 11.
