HANOVER, ON — Hanover Raceway will be the testing ground for Allan Breadner’s newest acquisition when the three-year-old trotting fillies arrive at the Grey County oval for Grassroots competition on Saturday.
The Markdale resident purchased Allraes Super Girl on Monday and Breadner admits he was not aware she had an Ontario Sires Stakes event coming up until he spoke to a colleague at Grand River Raceway on Monday evening.
“When I did buy her I didn’t even know she had a stakes race coming up. I was just going to bring her home and try her in an overnight,” says the trainer. “I was talking to Bill Megens, he bought one at the same sale and he qualified his Monday night at Grand River, and he said they had a stake race on Saturday night, otherwise I wouldn’t have known it was this close.”
Breadner is looking forward to seeing what the Angus Hall daughter can do over his local oval. The long time horseman trained Allraes Super Girl lightly Tuesday and Wednesday and found very little to dislike about the leggy filly.
“I’m not going to change anything,” says Breadner. “I was going to shorten her toes up a little, but she’s trotting perfectly, so I thought I’d better leave her alone until after the race.”
While the filly is a model citizen on the training track, Breadner has found she is not quite as easy going around the barn.
“She’s a little pushy and bossy in the barn,” he says. “She leads you where she wants to go.”
Breadner purchased Allraes Super Girl from Edwin Martin on Monday after the Elmira resident plucked her out of Saturday’s Summer Sizzler Sale for a mere $3,000. Prior to the sale Allraes Super Girl had been racing for breeder Earl Beirnes of Sauble Beach and had one third in Grassroots action to her credit through eight starts. Last season the filly boasted one win and two seconds in Grassroots action and advanced through to the Grassroots Semifinal and Final.
“She had a pretty good record last year as a two-year-old,” notes Breadner. “She won a stakes race and was placed in a couple. And she doesn’t make too many breaks, she’s only got one or two on her card, so far.”
Allraes Super Girl will make her debut for Breadner from Post 2 in the seventh race on Saturday, the fifth of seven $15,000 Grassroots divisions for the sophomore trotting lasses. She faces a field of seven Grassroots veterans, including former winner K T Cha Cha from Post 4.
The three-year-old trotting fillies are featured in Races 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 on Saturday evening, with Hanover Raceway’s first race rolling up behind the starting gate at 7:25 pm.
