GLOUCESTER, ON — Brad Forward reunited with last year’s Grassroots champion Tomorrowpan at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Thursday evening, and engineered the first Ontario Sires Stakes win of the season for the three-year-old pacing filly.
Starting from Post 7 in the second $24,000 Grassroots division, Forward put the No Pan Intended daughter on the front end before the half and never had to glance over his shoulder as Tomorrowpan cruised to a four and three-quarter length victory in 1:53.4. Star Of Show finished second, with Chief Karen earning third-place honours.
Bob McIntosh trains the talented Tomorrowpan for owner-breeder Peter Pan Stables Inc. of Pepper Pike, OH. Through three starts this season the young pacer has garnered one win and two seconds to add $21,000 to the $100,340 she amassed as a two-year-old.
If Forward had glanced back in the third race, the Ontario Sires Stakes program’s leading reinsman would have seen an accident caused when Tedeschi made a break just after the three-quarter marker. Three fillies suffered interference, and Erikastar Mindale and trainer-driver Alan Wallace fell to the track and were unable to complete the race. Rideau Carleton Raceway officials disqualified Tedeschi for causing the accident.
Forward made a second trip to the Rideau Carleton Raceway winner’s circle in the fifth race, piloting Paula Wellwood trainee Spoiled Beach to a 1:54.4 victory from Post 9. The talented Camluck lass now has two wins and one second in Grassroots action for a total of 125 points.
Cambridge resident Wellwood trains Spoiled Beach for owner-breeder Enviro Stables Ltd. of South Hampton, NY. Through 16 sophomore starts the filly boasts a record of eight wins and five seconds for earnings of $124,500.
Grin A Peg and Farmers Tuition rounded out the top three behind Spoiled Beach.
Forward and McIntosh teamed up again in the last Grassroots division, and Noshameinmygame battled hard in the stretch to earn them a second Grassroots trophy. The daughter of Camluck and Artistic Pleasure got a neck in front of CMR Bresha and fan favourite Lil Miss Nyalation, stopping the teletimer at 1:56.
Windsor resident McIntosh bred and owns Noshameinmygame with Al McIntosh Holdings Inc. of Leamington and Dwight Stacey of Mitchell. Through three starts this season the filly has posted one win and one third.
Not to be outdone by Forward, McIntosh secured a third victory on Thursday evening when Power Outage wired the field in 1:53.3. Michael Langdon engineered Power Outage’s victory for McIntosh, Paul Ysebaert of Mooretown, Dave Boyle of Bowmanville and Clifford Grundy of Howell, MI. The partners also bred the filly, who is a daughter of Camluck and Electrical Art.
Thursday marked Power Outage’s second straight visit to the winner’s circle. The filly scored her first lifetime victory at Woodstock Raceway on July 28. Pretty Thing finished two and a half lengths behind Power Outage, while fan favourite Euphoria Seelster was five lengths back in third.
The other Grassroots divisions went to Run To Vegas in 1:53.3 and Warrawee Koine in 1:54.3.
The three-year-old pacing fillies make the fifth stop on their Grassroots tour at Hiawatha Horse Park on Sept. 10. Before that the fillies will return to Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday, Aug. 30 for the first Trillium Series event on their calendar.
