INNISFIL, ON — Georgian Downs fans have been entertained by four different Ontario Sires Stakes divisions this summer, and watched four different track records fall victim to the province’s talented trotters and pacers.

On Tuesday evening Canadian Frontier added his name to the list of 2007 record setters at the Innisfil oval, stripping three-fifths of a second off the two-year-old trotting colt track record with an impressive 1:58.4 victory in the last of six Grassroots divisions.

Leaving from Post 2 with Jody Jamieson in the race bike, Canadian Frontier dropped onto the rail behind Sergeant York and dogged the leader’s heels through fractions of :28.3, :58.4 and 1:28.4. Turning for home the Dr Ronerail son was still one and a quarter lengths back, but when the sharp pace began to wear on Sergeant York, Canadian Frontier swept down the stretch to a neck victory in 1:58.4. Orbison Hall was 14 lengths behind the leaders in third.

The win lowered the 1:59.2 freshman trotting colt track record set by Mr Ontario in 2005 and marked Canadian Frontier’s fourth trip to the winner’s circle this season. Todd LePage of Moira, NY owns and trains the trotter, who was a $6,000 purchase at the Morrisville Yearling Sale last fall and has spent the last month racing on the fair circuit in New York State.

Jody Jamieson also captured the first Grassroots event of the evening, guiding Finnegan to a 2:01 front end score for his father Carl Jamieson of Princeton, Arthur Slack of Rockwood and George Harrison of Lancashire, ENG. The Angus Hall son controlled the pace throughout the mile, finishing one and three-quarter lengths ahead of White Hot and four lengths up on Golden Genes Hall.

Finnegan started his career in the Gold Series, but a break in his Aug. 2 Gold Elimination at Mohawk Racetrack and a bout of sickness prompted trainer Carl Jamieson to drop the brother to $156,563 winner Disco Inferno into the Grassroots for Tuesday’s outing.

The same strategy worked for trainer-driver Wayne Henry in the third $17,109 Grassroots division. Striker Springs has one third and one fifth-place finish in Gold Elimination action to his credit, but the Striking Sahbra son stepped into the winner’s circle on Tuesday with a big move around the final turn.

Third by seven and a quarter lengths at the halfway point, Henry sent Striker Springs up the outside heading toward the three-quarters and had pulled off to an 11 length lead before the top of the stretch. Runner-up Vector Versage made inroads on the colt’s lead, but when Striker Springs hit the wire in 2:02.1 he was still on top by five lengths and third-place finisher Hug It Out was 12 lengths to the rear.

Shelley Henry of Arthur owns Striker Springs, who was a $4,000 bargain at the 2007 Harrisburg Yearling Sale. Through six starts the colt now boasts a record of one win, one second and one third for earnings of $19,486.

Incredible Abe son Abe Linkin also dropped out of the Gold Series into the Grassroots winner’s circle on Tuesday. Trained by Dr. Joan Gough for Falconbrydge Farms of Mount Brydges, Abe Linkin cruised to a five length victory over The Rebel Duke and Its All A Dream in 2:01.1. ‘Mr. OSS’ Dave Wall engineered the colt’s first victory.

The other two Grassroots divisions went to Superfast Stuart in 2:02.2 and Nesta in 2:02.1.

The two-year-old trotting colts make their fourth Grassroots start on Sept. 1 at Woodstock Raceway. The next group of Ontario Sires Stakes competitors who will take aim on a Georgian Downs track record are the two-year-old pacing fillies, who arrive at the Innisfil oval on Tuesday, Sept. 25 for their fifth Grassroots contest.
