BELLEVILLE, ON — Fresh off track record performances at Hanover Raceway in just their second Grassroots event of the season, the two-year-old pacing fillies bring their speed show to Quinte Exhibition Raceway on Monday afternoon with 36 fillies vying for a total of $104,585.

Eatonmeadow Philly heads to Belleville with one Grassroots victory under her belt and trainer Susanne Kerwood hopes the Run The Table daughter can use her skills to earn a second, in spite of being handicapped by Post 6.

“She’s good on a half, she can pace around any turn,” says Kerwood, who trains Eatonmeadow Philly for breeders Sarah Crossman and James Clark of Rockwood. “In Hanover she came first up and that didn’t bother her. I think she’ll be close.”

In the July 23 event at Hanover Raceway Eatonmeadow Philly and driver Doug Brown eased off the gate from Post 3 and then sat on the outside through the last half of the mile, edging by the leader in the final strides to score a neck victory in 2:02.2. Brown will be back in the race bike on Monday, and Kerwood would not be surprised to see a similar strategy from the pair.

“She’s a real handy filly, but she’s not going to win by open lengths. She’s a grinder,” says the Campbellville resident. “It all depends on what Doug wants to do, he’s driving, but she’s very versatile. She can go any style.”

Kerwood is quick to credit James Clark with a great deal of the filly’s success. The hands-on owner makes daily visits to Kerwood’s training facility and has assumed a great deal of Eatonmeadow Philly’s care.

“It’s probably because of him that she’s gone as far as she has,” says the trainer. “He comes out every day, and jogs her a lot. He really loves her.”

The sister to $101,546 winner Resin The Bow will prep for Monday’s test with a final work-out on Friday, but Kerwood says the young pacer does not need a lot of fast work at this stage in her career.

“I will train her a little bit Friday, a couple of slow trips, but she doesn’t need a lot,” she explains. “We’ll go from there and hope for the best.”

Lining up alongside Eatonmeadow Philly in Monday’s seventh race are five Grassroots veterans and one newcomer to the provincial program. From Post 2, Jakes Cam heads into her first lifetime start off a 1:58.4 qualifier at Mohawk Racetrack for trainer Brett Robinson and owners Marilyn and Ian Fromowitz of Richmond Hill. McMacattack, who has a pair of third place finishes in Grassroots action to her credit, will start from Post 5 for trainer Jack Remmerswaal of Puslinch and his partner Peter McArthur of Smithville.

Quinte Exhibition Raceway’s Civic Holiday program swings onto the racetrack at 1:30 pm, with the talented two-year-old pacing fillies featured in Races 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7.
