CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Ontario’s precocious two-year-old pacing colts bring their record breaking road show to Mohawk Racetrack on Sunday evening, competing in four Gold Eliminations worth a total of $117,000.

Jack Darling will harness Twin B Survivor from Post 1 in the first elimination and the Cambridge resident was happy to see reigning Gold Final champ Funny Bones draw into the third split. In elimination action at Georgian Downs on June 17 both Twin B Survivor and Funny Bones won their respective races, but Funny Bones streaked around the five-eighths mile oval to a 1:52.4 track record, more than two seconds faster than Twin B Survivor.

“That 1:52.4 up there was unbelievable really,” says Darling, who shares ownership on Twin B Survivor with Daniel Smith of London. “But they’ll go fast again this week. I assume they’ll go around 1:53 again.”

In the June 24 Gold Final at Georgian Downs Funny Bones posted a relatively sedate 1:55.1 victory and Twin B Survivor was seven and three-quarter lengths back in third.

“Last week he raced good. He got locked in, but he shook loose at the end and was strong finishing,” notes Darling. “I was happy.”

Darling and Smith acquired Twin B Survivor from the Forest City Yearling Sale last fall, bidding $37,000 for the son of Apaches Fame and $116,833 winner What An Attitude based on the colt’s looks and his breeding.

“He was a great looking horse. He had that real Apaches Fame look to him,” recalls Darling. “I’ve had some luck with Apaches Fames and he was one that appealed to me.”

Once he arrived in Darling’s barn, Twin B Survivor demonstrated some early ability and a laid back personality somewhat at odds with his breeding.

“He’s an Apaches Fame and you always worry about them getting hot, so we tried to keep him as calm as possible, but he’s been pretty well problem free,” says the veteran horseman. “He’s just kind of a real nice horse to have around. You don’t really know he’s there. He just likes to eat and sleep and race.”

Before heading up to Georgian Downs for the Gold Series season opener, Darling qualified the colt at Mohawk on June 6 and Twin B Survivor delivered a solid 2:00.3 effort. The 1:55 elimination win on June 17 further confirmed the talent that Darling had glimpsed through the winter and early spring.

“I knew he was a nice colt, but you never know how good they are until they meet other horses like that,” he explains. “They have to be so good to be A’ horses any more.”

Twin B Survivor will tackle a field of seven in Race 2 on Sunday — two other veterans of the Georgian Downs season opener, two newcomers to the provincial racing scene and three colts making an early leap up from the Grassroots Series.

Post time for Mohawk Racetrack’s Sunday evening program is 7 pm and the freshman pacing colts will square off in Races 2, 3, 5, and 7. The top two finishers from each elimination, plus two third-place finishers drawn by lot, will return to the Campbellville oval on Sunday, July 9 for the second of five $130,000 Gold Finals on their schedule.
