FRASERVILLE, ON — After hosting the two-year-old pacing colt debut, Kawartha Downs will be the testing ground for 56 two-year-old trotting fillies Tuesday afternoon.
Competing for a total of $105,000 in seven Grassroots divisions, the fillies will be looking to establish themselves as players on the Ontario Sires Stakes scene. Among the youngsters hoping to make an early impact is Tyrone Abee, bred and owned by Bowmanville resident Dave Boyle.
“She trained down good all winter, she’s a nice filly, so we’re hopeful,” says Boyle. “We’ll know better after Tuesday whether we’ve got a racehorse or not.”
Boyle is looking forward to watching the daughter of Balanced Image and Dewberry in action at his local oval. Bob McIntosh trains the young trotter and Boyle does not get down to see her at McIntosh’s Windsor area farm as often as he would like.
“Two or three times a year we try to get down there, not as often as I would like, but it’s just time,” laments Boyle, who is also looking forward to having the filly back on his farm for one night before her race. “I think Bob is planning on shipping down to our farm on Monday, so we’ll enjoy that.
“We’ve had a lot of enjoyment with the Standardbreds since we’ve been with Bob.”
McIntosh also trained Tyrone Abee’s siblings, Tyrone Dillon and Tyrone Burberry, who were both Grassroots winners. The filly is a full sister to Tyrone Dillon, but Boyle says she bears little resemblance to her older brother.
“She’s a different filly. She’s more like the Balanced Image side of the family, he was more like the mare,” explains the breeder, who shares ownership on Tyrone Abee with McIntosh. “She’s a very different looking horse all together.”
Tyrone Abee makes her racing debut from Post 1 in the third Grassroots division on Tuesday and heads into the $15,000 contest off a 2:05.4 qualifier at Windsor Raceway on June 29.
Among the fillies Tyrone Abee will face in Race 3 are Suzie’s On A Roll from Post 2 and Lynleelu from Post 6. Suzie’s On A Roll is the daughter of former Ontario Sires Stakes winner Oaklea Ginny and a half-sister to former Gold Final winner Gerry Lavec, who earned $157,931 in his career. Lynleelu, one of seven fillies that four-time Johnston Cup winning trainer Ross Henry will harness in Tuesday’s event, is a sister to former Grassroots star It’s Go Time, a winner of $144,341.
The two-year-old trotting fillies kick off Kawartha Downs’ Tuesday evening program at 4 pm, with the other six Grassroots divisions going postward in Races 2, 3, 4, 6, 9 and 10.
