SUDBURY, ON — Randy Fritz had a very satisfying trip to Sudbury Downs on Saturday night, steering trotting fillies Margo Hall and Random Solution to victory in their respective $35,273 Trillium Series divisions.

Catch driving Margo Hall for trainer Ted MacDonnell, Fritz eased the filly off the starting gate and settled in fourth on the rail as two-time Grassroots winner Tameka Seelster stepped to a :29.3 opening quarter. Coming around the second turn, Fritz tipped Margo Hall to the outside and had advanced to third by the time Tameka Seelster reached the 1:00.3 half.

Piling on the pressure heading for the 1:31.3 three-quarters and around the final turn, Margo Hall had disposed of Tameka Seelster by the time she turned for home and was able to hold off pocket sitter Fiesty Fergie by half a length to record the 2:02 victory. World Premiere closed well to finish three-quarters of a length back in third.

Allenford resident MacDonnell trains and shares ownership on Margo Hall with his partner in Northorn Stable, Jeffery Ruch. The Like A Prayer daughter has earned her owners $32,536 through two wins, one second and one third in seven starts this season.

Three races after his catch driving success, Fritz earned a second trip to the winner’s circle aboard his own trainee, Random Solution.

When the rail horse Grammy Hall made an early break, Fritz decided to take advantage of the opportunity to grab early control of the race. Random Solution was at the opening quarter in :29.4, and the Angus Hall miss never saw a challenger as she sailed through a :58.4 half and 1:29.4 three-quarters on her way to a four length victory in 2:00.2.

Tymal Mystique echoed her stablemate Fiesty Fergie’s second-place finish, and Fritz’s brother Dale piloted Live In Love to the third-place cheque.

The win was Random Solution’s second in nine starts this season and boosted her sophomore bank roll to $31,581. The filly started her season at the Gold Series level, but Fritz opted to drop her down to the Grassroots for her second provincial outing, where Random Solution was able to earn a runner-up placing in spite of drawing the outside Post 7.

Burlington resident Fritz shares ownership on Random Solution with LGK Stables of Guelph and Daniel McCann of Parkhill.

The three-year-old trotting fillies make their second Trillium Series start on Sept. 11 at Rideau Carleton Raceway, but the Grassroots fillies will return to action on Aug. 7 at Hiawatha Horse Park and the Gold Series fillies will battle at Mohawk Racetrack on Aug. 1. Sudbury Downs fans will have their first look at the province’s top two-year-olds on Aug. 3 when the half-mile oval hosts the freshman trotting fillies in their second Grassroots event.
