OTTAWA, ON — Bob McIntosh had a Super Sunday in Ontario Sires Stakes action on Aug. 14, capturing two Gold Finals and a pair of Grassroots divisions with his 2011 freshman pacing crop.

The Hall of Fame horseman started his weekend win streak at Flamboro Downs on Sunday afternoon when two-year-old pacing colt I Found My Beach emerged victorious in his first-ever $130,000 Gold Final, then moved to Rideau Carleton Raceway, where two-year-old pacing filly Class Of O Nine overcame Post 9 to capture her second Gold Final title and a pair of her freshman pacing colt stablemates earned Grassroots trophies.

Regular reinsman Randy Waples crafted a classic second-over trip for Class Of O Nine in the pacing filly Gold Final, getting away fifth and then rolling out behind Mindsweeper heading toward the half.

Elimination winner Classy Lane Rose was quickest off the starting gate, trying to gain position from Post 8, and the Jeremes Jet filly rang up an opening fraction of :28.4 before handing the lead baton off to YS Gold Star. Denis St. Pierre guided YS Gold Star to a :58.4 half and a 1:28.2 three-quarters without facing a challenge, but with Mindsweeper and Class Of O Nine reeling in horses on the outside and Classy Lane Rose tucked cozily into the pocket, Rideau Carleton fans knew they were in for an exciting finish.

Turning for home with less than three lengths separating the top six contenders, the freshman pacing fillies did not disappoint, battling right to the wire. Off the energy-saving trip styled by Waples, Class Of O Nine had more than enough acceleration left to claim the half-length victory in 1:57, besting Cooking The Books and Classy Lane Rose.

McIntosh bred and shares ownership on Class Of O Nine with his longtime partner Dwight Stacey of Mitchell. Through seven starts this season the daughter of Camluck and Skippin School has accumulated four wins and one second for earnings of $176,500. The filly also captured the first Gold Final of the season at Flamboro Downs, sweeping through both her June 26 elimination and the July 3 final.

And if two Gold Final trophies in one day were not enough, McIntosh added a matching set of Grassroots hardware to the haul when So Take That and In Commando captured their respective divisions.

So Take That kicked off McIntosh’s hat trick at Rideau Carleton, sprinting from third to first down the stretch to claim a head victory over Late Night Flight in the seventh race. Retail, owned by Robert Seguin of Gatineau, QC did all the work on the front end, but had to settle for third spot in the 1:57.1 mile.

The Windsor resident bred and owns So Take That with Dave Boyle of Bowmanville, ON and C S X Stables of Liberty Center, Ohio, and had harnessed the son of Camluck and Everybreathutake in three starts this season, with Sunday’s effort marking the colt’s first appearance in the top three.

McIntosh’s other Grassroots hardware came from In Commando in the last $24,000 Grassroots division. The Camluck son and Waples were moving aggressively up the outside when pacesetter YS Charlie went off stride and they made the most of the opportunity, sailing home to a three length win in 1:57.4. Who Doesnt and Twickenham rounded out the top three.

Robert McIntosh Stables Inc. and Al McIntosh Holdings Inc. of Leamington share the ownership papers on In Commando, who was also making his first appearance in the winner’s circle through five starts.

In other Grassroots action, True To Mach maintained his position at the top of the leaderboard with a third straight Grassroots victory for trainer Jim Ainsworth and owners Larry Ainsworth of Petrolia and William Boden of Vancouver, BC. The Mach Three son bested Daniel Semalu and Some Or Lis with his 1:57.3 effort.

With three Grassroots victories in three outings, True To Mach boasts a perfect 150 points in the race toward one of 16 post season berths. Phil Hudon has been in the race bike for all five of the colt’s starts.

R Gauwitz Hanover was a 2:00.2 winner for Katherine Steacy of Lansdowne, Landmark IV Racing Stable of Elginburg, David Reid of Glenburnie and Bridle Path Stables Ltd. of Ossining, NY; Secretsoftheknight scored a 1:56.2 win for Tony Lawrence of Hanover, Leonard Gamble of Etobicoke, John Newell of Waterloo and Graham Hopkins of Chesley; Instant Thrill hit the wire in 1:56.4 for Gilles Plourde and Karen Kroeger of Gatineau, QC; and Red Carpet Dude paced home to a 1:57.4 win for Glenview Livestock Ltd. of Wallenstein and Bill Manes of Rockwood.

The two-year-old pacing colts return to Grassroots action on Aug. 27 at Kawartha Downs, while the two-year-old pacing fillies head to Windsor Raceway for their fourth Gold Series event on Sept. 18. Ontario Sires Stakes excitement will roll back into Ottawa on Friday, Sept. 9 when Rideau Carleton Raceway hosts the three-year-old trotting fillies in Grassroots action.
