CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Two-year-old pacing colt Goose Creek took full advantage of the absence of reigning Gold Final champion Funny Bones to claim his first Gold Series victory at Mohawk Racetrack on Sunday evening.
With Funny Bones scratched due to sickness from the third $29,000 Gold Elimination, driver Mike Saftic opted to send Goose Creek straight to the front from Post 2. The pair delivered beautifully measured fractions of :27.4, :57.1 and 1:26.4 before sprinting down the stretch to the 1:54 victory.
Gold Comet finished one length back in second and Saratoga Seelster was three lengths back in third.
The effort marked Goose Creek’s second appearance in the winner’s circle. After finishing fourth in the season opening Gold Elimination at Georgian Downs on June 17, the Camluck son posted a 1:56 victory back at the Innisfil oval on June 24.
David Menary trains Goose Creek for breeders Barry and Debbie Bird of Harwood and Cyril Hayes of Burlington and their partner Kenneth Ewen of Georgetown. The young pacer is the first foal from $187,077 winner Jacks Creek.
Driver Jody Jamieson and his father Carl Jamieson teamed up to score two Gold Elimination wins on Sunday. The pair captured the second elimination with first time starter Twin B Impact, who circled the seven-eighths mile oval in a smart 1:56. Mats Havin A Ball and Uncle Daddy finished four lengths behind Twin B Impact, who controlled the pace for most of the mile.
Princeton resident Carl Jamieson, Jerry Jamieson of Blenheim, Bradley McDonald of Beamsville and Douglas Good of Chatham share ownership on Twin B Impact, who was a $30,000 purchase out of the Forest City Yearling Sale. The Camotion colt is a half brother to $134,601 winner Pounder and $186,613 winner Twin B Mirage.
Four races later the Jamieson’s returned to the winner’s circle with Warrawee Ideal, already a veteran of the Ontario Sires Stakes program with second and fourth-place finishes in the season opening Gold event at Georgian Downs. The Million Dollar Cam son sat off the pace as The Scalawag rolled through fractions of :26.4, :57.4 and 1:27 and then charged down the stretch to the 1:55.1 victory. Sergei Seelster and favourite Basso Hanover rounded out the top three.
Carl Jamieson, George Arthur Stable of Rockwood, Fred Brayford of Alliston and Robin Raine of Cumbria, ENG acquired Warrawee Ideal for $23,000 from the Forest City Sale which he has returned, with interest, in just three starts.
Twin B Survivor picked up his second Gold Elimination trophy with a 1:55.3 score in the first elimination for trainer Jack Darling of Cambridge and his partner Daniel Smith of London. In rein to Randy Waples, the Apaches Fame son cruised around the Mohawk oval on the front end, reaching the wire two lengths ahead of Raw Energy and Premier Luck.
Twin B Survivor also completed repayment of his $37,000 purchase price with Sunday’s victory.
The top two finishers from each elimination, plus a pair of third-place finishers drawn by lot, will return to Mohawk Racetrack on Sunday, July 9 for their second $130,000 Gold Final.
