ELORA, ON — Over the next five weeks Grand River Raceway will offer fans an outstanding line up of Ontario Sires Stakes racing, beginning this Friday, July 4 with the Trillium Series season opener for the three-year-old pacing fillies.
Open to all Ontario-owned fillies, regardless of where their sire resides, the Trillium Series offers harness racing fans an opportunity to see some of the top Gold, Grassroots and American-sired youngsters in action. Friday night’s contest will see five American-bred fillies take on six Grassroots regulars, a trio of fillies that have raced at both the Gold and Grassroots level this season, and three fillies making their debut in the provincial program.
Among the American-sired fillies hoping to find their niche in the Trillium Series is Warrawee Jangle, who will make her stakes debut from Post 9 in the first $37,414 division.
“She’s out of a sister to Armbro Romance,” notes owner and breeder Dr. Michael Wilson of Rockwood. “She’s fast, but she’s had some problems. She makes breaks coming in to the straight, and we haven’t worked out why yet. She’s a nice filly, but we have to solve this problem.”
Through her first three starts, all at Mohawk Racetrack, Warrawee Jangle failed to find her way into the top five. Handicapping the filly’s attempts has been her dismal luck in the post position draws — the daughter of Dragon Again and Armbro Wisdom has started from Post 7 once and Post 9 twice.
Fortunately, Post 9 at Grand River is a trailing post, and Wilson hopes the move to a half-mile racetrack and the novelty of seeing the rail will contribute to a solid effort from the half-sister to $148,722 winner Up Front Lady.
“This is the best post she’s had this year,” points out Wilson. “She has the speed to do well in the Trillium. She shows tremendous speed. She just has to get over this problem.”
Puslinch resident Andy Avery will harness Warrawee Jangle for Friday’s race, handing the lines off to Grand River regular Scott Coulter. Coulter and Warrawee Jangle face a field of eight that includes Shake That Junk, a Gold Series star last season and winner of a division of the Grassroots season opener, from Post 4, and June 22 Grassroots winner Windsong Eclipse from Post 7.
In addition to Warrawee Jangle, two other American-sired fillies will also test their skills in the first Trillium skirmish. Southwind Piaya gets Post 1 and Marla Hanover will start from Post 2.
The other Trillium division features two fillies who earned Grassroots hardware at Clinton Raceway on June 22. Slomotion will start from Post 5, with Kingfishers Gypsy on her right hand at Post 6.
Post time at Grand River Raceway on Friday evening is 7:25 pm, with the three-year-old pacing fillies slated to battle for a total of $74,198 in Races 3 and 7.
