GLOUCESTER, ON — The air temperature at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Thursday evening fell to four degrees Celsius, but trackside things were sizzling as the two-year-old pacing colts blazed their way through three $24,000 Grassroots divisions.

Good Bad Lucky and driver Brad Forward scored the sharpest mile of the evening, reaching the wire one length on top in 1:54.2. Starting from Post 1, Forward settled the fan favourite on the rail in fourth as Twin B Warrior rolled out to a :27.3 opening quarter. As Twin B Warrior marched to a :56.4 half and 1:25.1 three-quarters, Good Bad Lucky advanced up the outside and was just half a length behind the leader as they turned for home.

When Forward pressed the accelerator, Good Bad Lucky pulled away to the victory, leaving Twin B Warrior to settle for second. Third-place finisher Luckamotion was five and a half lengths behind the leaders.

The win was the second straight and the third of the season for Good Bad Lucky, who is trained by Windsor resident Bob McIntosh for his partners Al McIntosh Holdings Inc. of Leamington and Dwight Stacey of Mitchell. The partners also bred the son of Camluck and Our May West, who started his provincial campaign in the Gold Series, before dropping back to the Grassroots in time for the Sept. 24 event at Hiawatha Horse Park where he scored a 1:55.1 victory.

Russell resident John MacDonald picked up a catch drive aboard Lyons Frank in the first Grassroots division and earned himself a trip to the winner’s circle, teaming the fan favourite to a 1:56 victory. MacDonald sent Lyons Frank straight to the front from Post 5 and the pair spun off fractions of :28.2, :58.2, and 1:26.4 on their way to the one and a half length victory over St Lads Bounty and Cool And Collected.

Shawn Robinson trains Lyons Frank for Joseph Lyons Mound of Burford. Through 13 starts the Camluck colt has accumulated four wins, two seconds and one third for earnings of $22,192. Lyons Frank was also a Grassroots winner at Hiawatha Horse Park and sports 100 points through four provincial outings.

In the final Grassroots event, veteran reinsman Gord Brown piloted Warrawee Lad to an eight and a half length victory in 1:54.4. St Lads Lennon clocked the :27.2 quarter and :56.4 half splits before handing things over to Warrawee Lad, who carried on to a 1:25.3 three-quarters and the 1:54.4 victory.

Frank Loyens of Denfield and Harry Loyens of Ilderton share ownership on the Million Dollar Cam son, who is trained by Bill Robinson. Through eight starts Warrawee Lad has three victories, all in Grassroots action, and two thirds, and sits atop the division standings with a total of 170 points.

The two-year-old pacing colts complete their regular season Grassroots schedule on Oct. 12 at Western Fair Raceway before the top 16 point earners return to Rideau Carleton for their Oct. 23 Grassroots Semifinals. The top four finishers from each Semifinal will participate in the Nov. 1 Grassroots Championship at Rideau, worth a cool $100,000.

Before the Grassroots excitement builds later in the month, Rideau Carleton Raceway fans will be treated to one last dose of Gold Series action on Sunday, Oct. 4 when the two-year-old trotting colts battle for $130,000 and a Gold Final crown.
