DUNDAS, ON — Bruce MacDonald will harness two sophomore pacing fillies in the Wednesday, Sept. 26 Trillium Series at Flamboro Downs and the trainer says he has mixed expectations heading into the $72,000 event.

First time Trillium starter Lethegoodtimesroll will line up from Post 5 in a division loaded with Gold Series talent and MacDonald just hopes the Life Sign lass can stay in the game.

“I’m stretching her out putting her in there. She’s going because Secret Grin is going,” says MacDonald of Lethegoodtimesroll, who has just seven starts under her belt. “If I get fifth, that will be a victory. She’s in there with Canadette and that filly of (Shawn) Robinson’s, Milliondollarsmile. That would have been a tough spot for Secret Grin.”

Unlike her stablemate, Secret Grin is a seasoned veteran of the provincial racing scene. The Grinfromeartoear daughter was a five-time winner on the Grassroots and Trillium scene at two and has one Grassroots, one Trillium and one Flamboro Breeders Stake win to her credit this season. The winner of $162,848 will start from Post 2 in the second $36,056 Trillium division and MacDonald is confident that the filly will deliver a solid performance.

“She always shows up to play,” asserts the Alliston resident, who trains the fillies for Mardon Stables of Loretto. “One thing about her, if you look at her lines, she’s in the top three all the time. She’s a real hard knocker. Never once have I taken her to race and come back thinking she raced bad.”

Among the fillies that Secret Grin will face Wednesday is Grassroots rival Spun Sugar, who will also be looking for her second Trillium Series win of the season from Post 6 in the seventh race.

Spun Sugar heads into Wednesday’s contest off a pair of victories and owner Bradley Grant of Milton would love to see her make it three straight.

“I’m hoping that she’ll have some luck,” says Grant, who acquired the Camluck miss halfway through her two-year-old campaign. “She’s never really cheated us. She’s an honest mare.”

A winner of three regular season Grassroots events and a Semifinal at two, Spun Sugar has logged one Trillium victory and three Grassroots wins this season. She was an impressive front end winner in Grassroots action at Hanover Raceway on Sept. 15, and prepped for Wednesday’s race with a 1:52 win at Mohawk Racetrack on Sept. 21.

“I thought, when we bought her, maybe she’d get a little better. And she did, but some of them got a lot better,” reflects Grant. “She does race with a lot of heart. She will race from the front and she will race from the back end.”

Both Grant and MacDonald classify their fillies as one step below the Gold Series, and will have a chance to test that on Wednesday as Secret Grin and Spun Sugar will face two top class fillies in the second Trillium division.

Former Gold Final winner Jans Luck will start from Post 3 and Appleoosa Hanover, recently returned to Ontario from a disappointing miscue in the Jugette, will start from Post 7.

Post time at Flamboro Downs on Wednesday is 6 pm, and fans will be treated to action from the talented three-year-old pacing fillies in Races 5 and 7.
