DUNDAS, ON — Tymal Cameron powered to the fastest win in nine Grassroots battles at Flamboro Downs on Wednesday evening, stopping the clock in 1:54.2 in the first race.
The three-year-old pacing colt and driver Trevor Henry sat contentedly in third as pacesetter Three Cents rolled through fractions of :27.4, :57.3 and 1:25.3. Heading by the three-quarters Henry had the Mach Three son on the move and when the colts turned for home Tymal Cameron had a short lead that he extended to a one length margin with an impressive finishing kick.
Justa Regular Joe also closed well to finish second and favourite Wantasmile benefited from a pocket trip to earn the third-place finisher’s share of the $15,000 Grassroots purse.
Paul Taylor trains Tymal Cameron for Audrey and Robert McKinley of Clinton. Wednesday’s victory was the first in Grassroots action for the gelding, who finished second in both the Grassroots season opener at Western Fair on June 18 and the July 15 event at Clinton Raceway. A consistent performer, Tymal Cameron’s win boosted his sophomore record to five wins, six seconds and two thirds in 19 starts for earnings of $56,025.
Trevor Henry and Paul Taylor also teamed up to win the third race of the evening with Blatantly Good, who got a similar trip behind pacesetter Village Victory before breaking free in the stretch to claim a half length win in 1:55.4.
Glenview Livestock Ltd. of Wallenstein own Blatantly Good, who was also a Grassroots winner at Western Fair in June. Through 12 starts the Albert Albert son boasts four wins, one second and three thirds.
Village Victory stayed game for second, and Oakley Seelster rounded out the top three.
In Race 6, fans of Taylor and Henry thought they had a shot at cashing another win ticket when lightly rated Designer Guy mounted an impressive challenge at the three-quarters, but the colt could not muscle his way past leaders Hes A Lion and Emmys Passion and had to settle for third.
After doing all the work on the front end through fractions of :28.3, :58.2 and 1:26.4, Hes A Lion delivered a game effort in the stretch but could not hold off pocket sitter Emmys Passion, who got up for the head victory in 1:55.2.
Luc Ouellette guided Emmys Passion to the victory for trainer, owner and breeder Gerald Mason of Lucan. The win was the Northern Luck gelding’s fourth of the season and his first in Grassroots action.
The Grin Man assumed sole ownership of the top spot in the sophomore pacing colt division standings with a three-quarter length victory in the ninth race. With Randy Fritz at the helm, The Grin Man took control of the race just past the :27.3 opening quarter, rolled unchallenged through a :57.1 half, turned back Gimme A Grin at the 1:25.2 three-quarters and then out-sprinted Mach Hula and Whitesand Noble down the stretch to claim the 1:54.3 win.
Guelph resident Gregg McNair trains The Grin Man for James Martin and William Switala of Clarence Center, NY and Joseph Critelli of Lockport, NY. The Grinfromeartoear son now has three Grassroots wins under his belt, for a flawless point tally of 150. He came into Wednesday’s event off a personal best 1:51.4 in a July 29 conditioned event at Mohawk Racetrack.
The other Grassroots divisions went to Mats Havin A Ball in 1:55; Test Flight in 1:55.3; Risky Rich in 1:55.1; Reign Of Thunder in 1:55.3 and the free-legged Laurel Canyon in 1:55.
The three-year-old pacing colts make their fourth Grassroots start on Aug. 29 at Sudbury Downs, while Ontario Sires Stakes excitement continues to build at Flamboro Downs with Gold Eliminations for the three-year-old trotting colts this Friday, Aug. 10.
