ELORA, ON — Honoured as the Ontario Sires Stakes’ leading trainer and driver last season, brothers Wayne and Trevor Henry shored up their 2008 point totals with a pair of Grassroots wins at Grand River Raceway on Tuesday evening.

Stepping off the starting gate with Fiesty Fergie in the fourth race, Trevor Henry sent the three-year-old trotting filly straight to the front and rocked through fractions of :29.1, :59 and 1:29 before digging in down the stretch to hold off fan favourite Most Fabulous and claim the 2:00.2 victory.

The win marked Fiesty Fergie’s first trip to the winner’s circle in four starts this season, and boosted her lifetime earnings to $45,788 for the Arthur-based Henry brothers and their partner Daniel McCann of Parkhill. Added to the eight points she garnered with a fourth-place finish in the Grassroots season opener, Tuesday’s win gives the Fiesty G G daughter 58 points in the race toward a berth in the season ending Grassroots championship.

Foamy rounded out the top three in the fourth race, trotting across the finish line four lengths behind the leaders.

One race later, the Henry’s blazed another trail to the winner’s circle with favourite Tameka Seelster. The Berndt Hanover daughter laid down fractions of :29.2, :59.4 and 1:29.4 en route to a 2:00.1 triumph. Lady Keely battled hard for the second-place share of the $20,000 Grassroots purse, with Dance Baby Dance catching the third-place cheque.

Joe Coffey of Orangeville and Terry O’Neill join the Henry Stable as owners on Tameka Seelster, who is now two for two in Grassroots action this season.

In addition to their victories, Wayne Henry earned training and driving points with a fifth-place finish in the third race with Tymal Mystique, while Trevor Henry added a runner-up finish in the seventh race with Rene Laarman trainee Abby Kadabra.

The seventh race marked the first half of a double for two other horseman. Driver Trevor Ritchie and trainer Mark Steacy also teamed up to capture a pair of Grassroots contests on Tuesday, the first a track record equalling effort by former Gold Series competitor Dornello.

Starting from the trailing Post 9, Ritchie did not allow Dornello to sit behind traffic for long. As Kicks And Giggles led the field to a :29.2 half, Dornello was driving up the outside to the front, taking command well before the :59.1 half. The pair extended their lead through the 1:29.2 three-quarters and then accelerated away from the field to a nine length victory in 1:58.4, matching the three-year-old trotting filly track record established by Holyrood in 2006.

Henry and Abby Kadabra trotted into second, with Dave Wall and Prescience 11 lengths to the rear in third.

A winner of $185,981 as a two-year-old, Dornello struggled in the Gold Series season opener, so Steacy opted to drop the daughter of Angus Hall and Me Maggie into the Grassroots for her second sophomore start. Joseph Myers of Jamesville, PA and Linda Worrell of Warminster, PA share ownership on the talented young trotter.

Ritchie and Steacy made their second appearance in front of the Grand River Raceway photographer in the tenth race, when Travelin Supergirl made a triumphant return to the Grassroots program with a wire-to-wire score in 1:59.

Last season’s Grassroots champion, Travelin Supergirl skipped the season opener and prepped for Tuesday’s contest with a start over a sloppy Mohawk Racetrack oval on June 15. Peter Heffering of Port Perry bred and owns the Kadabra miss, who boosted her lifetime bank balance to $124,420 with the win.

Ms Naughty finished a length and a half back of Travelin Supergirl, and Grammy Hall was two lengths back in third.

The other Grassroots divisions went to Magical Wand in 2:01; Valley Courtney in 2:00.2; and Pleasure Girls in 2:00.2.

The three-year-old trotting fillies make their third Grassroots stop at Hiawatha Horse Park on Aug. 7, while Grand River Raceway gears up for a spectacular stretch of stakes action starting Friday, July 4 with a Trillium Series event for the gifted three-year-old pacing fillies.
