HANOVER, ON — Two-year-old trotting filly H S Gingersnap delivered the fastest mile of eight Grassroots events at Hanover Raceway on Wednesday evening, anchoring a training hat trick for Arthur resident Wayne Henry.
With Trevor Henry in the race bike, the Fiesty G G daughter cruised to a commanding five and a half length victory in 2:04. Windsong Diamond earned the runner-up’s share of the $15,000 Grassroots purse and S A Saratoga was eight lengths behind the leader in third.
H S Gingersnap was also a winner in the season opening Grassroots event at Georgian Downs and now sits atop the division standings with a perfect 100 points. The Henry Stable of Arthur and Daniel McCann of Parkhill share ownership on the Fiesty G G daughter, who is a full sister to $161,673 winner Indys Kylee.
In addition to his training duties, Wayne Henry also drove Powerline Mesa and Tymal Francesca their victories in Races 1 and 6.
Powerline Mesa sat on the heels of fan favourite Oaklea Polly through much of the first race, then sprinted down the stretch to eke out a neck victory over fast closing Yorkys Girl and halt the teletimer at 2:05.1. Oaklea Polly settled for third, two lengths behind the leaders.
Sixth in both the July 4 Grassroots season opener and a June 24 Trillium Series division in Sudbury, Balanced Image daughter Powerline Mesa put all the pieces together in impressive fashion for owner-breeder NGA Powerline of Brantford.
In Race 6, Henry took full advantage of Post 1 and sent Tymal Francesca straight to the front. The Berndt Hanover miss, who started her freshman campaign on July 1 with a fourth-place finish in a Gold Elimination at Flamboro Downs, cruised through fractions of :31.4, 1:04.4 and 1:35.4 before charging home to a 2:05 victory over favourite Maple Missy and St Lads Diva.
The Henry Stable, James Laverty of Sauble Beach and Ron Waples of Guelph own Tymal Francesca, who was a $14,000 yearling acquisition at last fall’s Forest City Yearling Sale.
Trainer Frank O’Reilly of Orton, whose Caught My Eye currently leads the Gold Series two-year-old trotting filly standings, appears to have an equally solid entry for the Grassroots program. Taylorlane Dixie swept around the leaders in the stretch to score a 2:05.3 victory for O’Reilly and owner-breeder Edwin Taylor of Grand Valley.
Bill O’Donnell piloted the Abundance daughter to the one length triumph over Saranade K C and Tymal Torte. The outing was the filly’s second, she posted a fourth-place effort in the July 4 Grassroots opener.
The other Grassroots divisions went to Bio Stingray in 2:10.1, Maple Sugar in 2:09, Honeyconch in 2:04.2 and Meadowview Judy in 2:07.1.
Ontario’s two-year-old trotting filly crop returns to Grassroots action on Aug. 1 at Kawartha Downs. Ontario Sires Stakes action does not return to Hanover Raceway until Saturday, Sept. 2 when the remarkable three-year-old pacing fillies bring their high speed Grassroots show to the popular half-mile oval.
