ELORA, ON — Arthur resident Trevor Henry helped trainer Christopher Beaver take home a total of three Grassroots trophies from Grand River Raceway on Wednesday evening.

Aboard Pointe De Vue in the first $24,000 Grassroots division, Henry fired the two-year-old trotting filly away from the outside Post 8 and had her on top by two lengths at the :30.1 quarter. The pair maintained a healthy lead through the 1:02.1 half and 1:33.2 three-quarters and then battled hard in the stretch to record a nose victory over Random Margin. The leaders stopped the teletimer at 2:03.1, three and three-quarter lengths ahead of third-place finisher Canbec Kangourou.

The win was Pointe De Vue’s second in Grassroots action this season and boosted her into top spot in the division point race with 150. Delaware, OH resident Beaver shares ownership of the Striking Sahbra filly with Steven Shelton of Springfield, OH, David Lang of Hilliard, OH and James Gallagher of Columbus, OH.

In the fifth race Beaver handed Henry the lines of Hula Majic and the driver opted for the strategy that had already landed him in the Grassroots winner’s circle. Starting from Post 3 Hula Majic was on top by just over a length at the :29.4 quarter and maintained that margin through the 1:01.1 half, 1:32.2 three-quarters and on to the 2:03.2 victory. Twiggys Twick crossed the line one and three-quarter lengths back in second and Random Majority was two more lengths to the rear in third.

The win was the first this season for Hula Majic, a Kadabra daughter Beaver owns in partnership with Wilbur Lang of Jamestown, OH. In five Grassroots starts Hula Majic now has one win, one second, one third, one fourth and one fifth for a total of 100 points.

Beaver opted to handle driving duties on his third starter Standing My Ground. The daughter of Amigo Hall had made errors in two of her five starts, including an Aug. 9 start over a sloppy Mohawk Racetrack oval, but she was flawless at Grand River on Wednesday. Starting from Post 5 Standing My Ground rocketed straight to the front and sprinted around the half-mile to a track record 2:00.1. Ja El Golden Girl and Dreams N Glory were more than 10 lengths back in second and third.

The mile peeled three-fifths of a second off the former record, a 2:00.4 clocking set by Ontario Sires Stakes competitors Wilsonator in 2009 and Counter Pointe in 2011.

Beaver shares ownership of Standing My Ground with Synerco Ventures Inc. of Toronto and David Lang of Hilliard, OH. Wednesday’s appearance was the filly’s first in the Grassroots program, after three starts at the Gold Series level that saw her fail to advance out of the elimination round.

Trotting specialist Trevor Ritchie also picked up two Grassroots wins at the Elora oval on Wednesday. The Acton resident made his first appearance in the winner’s circle with William James trainee Tymal Textme, who battled to a quarter length victory over High Musclemass and Georgia Baby.

The 2:03.4 score was Tymal Textme’s second in Grassroots competition and gives her a total of 100 points. Blackstock resident James shares ownership of the Angus Hall lass with Donald Smith and Donna Parker of Hampton.

Ritchie then teamed up with Paul Reid trainee Be Winnin, who cruised to a five and one-quarter length victory in 2:03. Favourite Uliane Bayama settled for second and Olympia Gold trotted into third.

Robert Key of Leechburg, PA bred and owns Be Winnin, who was making just her second lifetime start. The Angus Hall daughter finished sixth in her career and Grassroots debut at Georgian Downs on Aug. 7.

Muscle Magic dropped down to the Grassroots program for her fifth lifetime start and put together a solid effort to score her first ever victory. The Muscle Mass daughter and driver Mario Baillargeon stopped the clock at 2:02.3 and trotted under the wire one and one-quarter lengths ahead of P C Momma Mia and Astonishing.

Rockwood resident Ben Baillargeon trains Muscle Magic for his partners Nunzio Vena of Bolton and Santo Vena of Brampton. The filly finished second in the elimination and third in the final of the first Gold Series event, but had struggled in her most recent starts at the upper tier.

The other Grassroots trophies were carried home by Abs Muscle Hall in 2:01.1 and Orderingin in 2:01.3.

Ontario’s talented two-year-old trotting fillies make their final regular season Grassroots stop at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sept. 14. Grassroots excitement is back at Grand River Raceway on Friday, Aug. 31 as the Elora oval rolls out the red carpet for the three-year-old trotting fillies.
