ELMIRA, ON — When Wayne and Trevor Henry packed their gear on Monday night before heading to Elmira Raceway, the Arthur residents were careful to include their maps to the winner’s circle. The brothers each drove in two Gold Eliminations, with Trevor capturing two and Wayne winning another to qualify a trio of two-year-old trotting fillies for next Monday’s $130,000 Gold Final.
Trevor Henry kicked off the Henry Stables’ winning evening with an upset in the first race. On board the fan’s fourth choice Fiesty Kindof Luv, Trevor stalked pacesetter Northern Fuchsia through fractions of :31.2, 1:02.4 and 1:33.3 before accelerating down the stretch to the 2:03.3 victory.
Northern Fuchsia, owned by Donald Lawson of Guelph, Paul Lawson of Georgetown and James Lawson of Oakville, fought hard and finished just one half length back in second with Incredible Mother rounding out the top three in the $28,684 contest. Reigning Gold Final champion and fan favourite Incredible Iam made a series of costly breaks that saw her finish a distant eighth.
Arthur resident Ross Henry trains Fiesty Kindof Luv for the family owned Henry Stables and prepped the homebred Fiesty G G filly for Monday’s Gold Elimination with a victory in the season opening Grassroots event at Kawartha Downs on July 12.
One race later Fiesty Kindof Luv’s stablemate Lemehavit and Wayne Henry made their way to the Elmira winner’s circle after using similar tactics to score a 2:03 victory over favourite Meadowview Marion and Beautiful Day.
Leaving from Post 2, Lemehavit settled into second spot through the early going as Chloe K took the field through early fractions of :30.2 and 1:01.2. Heading for the 1:32.3 three-quarter marker, Wayne sent the Angus Hall filly after the lead and Lemehavit responded with an impressive finishing kick that propelled her to the three and a half length triumph.
A $35,000 yearling, Lemehavit has already returned $21,150 to owners the Henry Stable of Arthur, Daniel McCann of Parkhill and Wally Yantz of Bloomingdale after just three starts.
The Henry’s wrapped up their impressive evening with a victory in the last elimination when Trevor steered Chelemark Spring to a wire-to-wire triumph over heavy favourite Sno Doubt About It. The Super Pleasure daughter took full advantage of starting from the inside Post 1, powering to the front and never glancing back as she sailed to the one length win in 2:05.2.
Crimmings, owned by P C Wellwood Enterprises Inc. of Cambridge and Antonio Vallecoccia of Milton, rounded out the top three in the ninth race.
The Henry Stable owns Chelemark Spring, who was an $8,000 bargain at last fall’s Canadian Classic Yearling Sale.
The other elimination went to Zorgwijk Emani and Steve Condren, who sprinted from fourth to first down the stretch to score the 2:04 win. Pacesetter and favourite Flirting Lavec was forced to settle for the second-place finisher’s share, while Victory Bouquet landed the show cheque.
Trained by James Dennie and owned by Rob Dennie of Walkerton, $3,700 yearling acquisition Zorgwijk Emani also prepped for her Gold Series debut with a win at the Grassroots level.
The top two finishers from each of the four eliminations will return to Elmira Raceway on Monday, Aug. 4 for their second $130,000 Gold Final. The fillies will co-star with Ontario’s top two-year-old pacing colts who compete in the $200,000 Battle of Waterloo Final on the Civic Holiday matinee.
