HANOVER, ON — Father and son duo Ross and Trevor Henry partnered for two wins and a runner-up placing in two-year-old trotting filly action at Hanover Raceway on Wednesday night. The duo posed in the winner’s circle after Races 7 and 10 with Taffeta Seelster and Zorgwijk Dutchess and logged the narrow miss with Odee Angelina in the first of six Grassroots divisions on the midweek program.
Taffeta Seelster’s 2:03.2 score was the fastest of the six Grassroots divisions and moved her into contention for one of 16 berths in the season ending Semifinal after just one Grassroots start. The King Conch daughter started her career in the Gold Series, where her best finish was a fourth-place finish in each Gold Elimination.
Owned by the Henry Stable of Arthur and James Massey of St. Marys, Taffeta Seelster has already repaid her $12,000 purchase price with one win, one second, one third and $20,170 earned in six starts.
Petals Of A Flower and Ljanearl trotted into second and third spot behind fan favourite Taffeta Seelster.
The Henry’s were back in front of the track photographer after the tenth race when Zorgwijk Dutchess scored a gate-to-wire 2:07.1 upset over heavy favourite Sarahs Crown and Armbro Acunar. The win moved the Valleymeister filly into a tie for top spot in the Grassroots standings with a perfect record of two wins in two starts and 100 points.
The Henry Stable, Ross Henry and sons Trevor and Wayne, share ownership on the young trotter with James Laverty of Sauble Beach. After her first Grassroots victory the partners opted to give Zorgwijk Dutchess a shot at the Gold Series fillies, but an early break in the July 29 event resulted in her return to the Grassroots on Wednesday night.
Trevor and Ross Henry narrowly missed the Ontario Sires Stakes hat trick in the first race when Michael Langdon and Memories Of Texas caught up with Odee Angelina through the final strides and pulled away to a 2:05.4 victory by just over one length.
The win was Memories Of Texas’ first in six starts and marked her arrival on the Grassroots scene after three unsuccessful starts at the Gold level. Alan and Cloah Fair of Ancaster bred and own the Wesgate Crown filly, who boosted her earnings to $15,776 with the victory.
X T C, owned by Mac Galbraith of Durham, trainer Gregg McNair of Guelph and Samuel Bova of Irving, NY, picked up the third-place finisher’s share.
The other divisions went to For The Luva Moni in 2:09, Zorgwijk Delmonica in 2:08.1 and Designable in 2:06.3.
The two-year-old trotting fillies make their next Grassroots start on Sept. 1 at Clinton Raceway.
Wednesday’s event wrapped up Hanover Raceway’s 2002 Ontario Sires Stakes schedule, which saw the popular half-mile oval host a total of five events. The OSS program looks forward to returning to Hanover in 2003 when the next generation of young trotters and pacers will be ready to make their debut on the provincial scene.
