FRASERVILLE, ON — Sons of sire Here Comes Herbie captured four of six Grassroots events at Kawartha Downs on Tuesday evening, led by Mister Herbie, who delivered a commanding 1:59.1 triumph.
Starting from the advantageous Post 1, trainer-driver Carl Jamieson sent Mister Herbie straight to the front and the colt rolled out fractions of :29.1, 1:00.1 and 1:29.1 on his way to a three length victory over Daylon Magician and Starlitestarbrite.
The outing was just Mister Herbie’s second start after missing the Grassroots season opener on July 15 due to sickness. Princeton, ON resident Jamieson shares ownership on Mister Herbie with Thomas Kyron of Toronto, ON. The partners acquired the son of Here Comes Herbie and former Ontario Sires Stakes regular Independent Lassie ($186,952) for $67,000 from last fall’s Canadian Open Yearling Sale.
Mister Herbie’s cousin Major Herbie picked up his second Ontario Sires Stakes win with a come from behind effort in the third $24,000 Grassroots division. With trainer-driver Wayne Henry in the race bike, Major Herbie stalked pacesetter Sheikh Mo through fractions of :30.3, 1:03 and 1:32.3 before exploding out of the pocket to a three length victory in 2:03.4. Edit and Northern Cato closed well to earn the second and third-place shares of the Grassroots purse.
Out of Independent Dame, a half-sister to Mister Herbie’s mother Independent Lassie, Major Herbie was a $20,000 purchase from the Canadian Open sale by the Henry Stable of Arthur, ON and Daniel McCann of Parkhill, ON. Through four starts the colt has one Grassroots and one Gold Elimination win to his credit for earnings of $39,700.
Here Comes Herbie son Bob From Brussels went off the heavy favourite in the sixth race and roared home to steal a half length victory from Bruce The Brave, also a son of Here Comes Herbie. Over And Out was five and one-half lengths back in third.
The 2:01.1 win was the first for Bob From Brussels, who finished second in the Grassroots season opener at Hiawatha Horse Park. Lyle MacArthur of St. George Brant, ON trains and drives Bob From Brussels for Anne Shunock of Dorchester, ON.
The other victorious son of Here Comes Herbie was Random Holdup, who clawed his way up the outside to a two length victory in 2:03. Speedy Texan finished second, while pacesetter The Odessa Man had to settle for third.
Trainer Kristina Anderson and Judith Bond of Paisley, ON share ownership on Random Holdup, who was steered to victory by Kenneth Wiese. The gelding has one win and one third to his credit through four starts and earnings of $15,800.
The other Grassroots divisions went to Mr Joe Sixpack, a Striking Sahbra son who halted the Kawartha Downs teletimer at 2:02.1 for trainer-driver Torgeir Hagmann and owner Kjell Magne Andersen of Oslo, NOR, and New Favourite, who romped to a six length triumph in 2:02.1 for trainer-driver Nick Henry of Mount Forest, ON. Henry shares ownership on the son of Holy Guacamolie with Robin O’Toole and David Devine, also of Mount Forest.
The two-year-old trotting colts renew their Grassroots rivalry on Sept. 18 at Woodstock Raceway, while the two-year-old pacing fillies head to Kawartha Downs on Saturday, Aug. 28 for their third Grassroots skirmish.
