WINDSOR, ON — Camaronni N Cheese delivered a gritty performance at Windsor Raceway on Saturday night to claim her first Gold Series win of the season in front of a hometown crowd.

The two-year-old pacing filly sat on the outside, hot on the heels of the leaders, through more than half of the race and still had enough guts to battle off Stonebridge Prima down the stretch and claim the 1:55.3 victory. Favourite To Helen Back settled for the third-place share of the $130,000 Gold Final purse.

The win marked Camaronni N Cheese’s first appearance in an Ontario Sires Stakes win photo, and was just her second victory of the season. Prior to Saturday’s victory the daughter of Camluck and Meatballs N Getty had not finished better than fourth in Gold Series action through five starts. She qualified for the Final with a fourth-place effort in last week’s elimination round at Windsor Raceway.

LaSalle resident Bob McIntosh shares ownership on the winner of $81,500 with Al McIntosh Holdings Inc. of Leamington and James Machan of North York. The partners also bred the filly, who is a full sister to former Ontario Sires Stakes competitor Hurtin N Flirtin ($257,220).

Sent off as the fourth choice in the field of nine fillies, Camaronni N Cheese returned $15.90 to win, $8.20 to place and $3.80 to show. Stonebridge Prima, the Windsor fans’ seventh choice, delivered a $41.00 place pay out and a $12.90 return on each show wager, while favourite To Helen Back paid $4.50 to show.

The exactor was worth $173.50, the triactor paid $841.90, and combining the top three fillies with fourth-place finisher Valkyrie Hanover on a superfecta ticket earned fans a cool $2,798.35.

While the pacing filly event featured upsets and sizeable pay outs, the two-year-old trotting filly Gold Final was easily captured by fan favourites Pure Ivory and Steve Condren, who cruised around the Windsor oval on the front end to a four length 1:58 score. Second choice Birminghim finished second and Nobody Nos Butme earned the third-place finisher’s share.

Milton resident Condren shares ownership on Pure Ivory with breeder Harry Rutherford of Mount Pleasant, Jerry VanBoekel of Bright and Christina Maxwell of Ayr. The talented Striking Sahbra daughter has crafted a record of eight wins and one second in 11 starts this season for earnings of $241,288. Brad Maxwell trains the filly, who also captured her elimination last weekend with a 1:58.3 effort.

The win was Pure Ivory’s first Gold Final triumph and boosted her point tally to 175, good enough for third place in the division standings. The top 10 point earners from the five regular season Gold Series events will go head-to-head at Woodbine Racetrack next Saturday, Nov. 12 in their $300,000 Super Final. The Rexdale oval will host a total of eight Super Finals on Saturday, with a total purse of $2.4 million up for grabs.
