DUNDAS, ON — How Is That Fair trotted to an impressive four and one quarter length victory in the two-year-old trotting colt Gold Final at Flamboro Downs on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mr Lavec colt, owned by Warren Waxman of Dundas, trainer Scott McEneny of Waterdown and Alan Alber of Thornhill, circled the Flamboro half-mile in 2:00.3, just three-fifths of a second off the track record for freshman trotting colts.

With master trotting pilot Trevor Ritchie at the controls, How Is That Fair got away steadily from Post 4 and was soon up and driving at early leader Disturbed, who took the colts to a :30.1 opening quarter. Just after the quarter pole How Is That Fair wrestled control from the colt that bested him in the elimination round and trotted to a 1:00.1 half.

Staring down a challenge from Lucky George going past the 1:30.2 three-quarters, How Is That Fair and Ritchie started to pull away from the field through the final turn, trotting home with power to spare.

Paul Shakes trainee Angus Scot, who drew into the Final when elimination winners Odee Scoot and Wake Up And Drive were not entered, delivered a steady performance to pick up the runner-up finisher’s share of the $130,000 purse and elimination winner Disturbed, also trained by Shakes, faded slightly to finish third.

Flamboro Downs fans sent How Is That Fair off as their top choice and earned $4.30 to win, $2.70 to place and $2.70 to show for their faith. Sixth choice Angus Scot returned $14.30 to place and $3.50 to show, while third choice Disturbed’s show effort was worth $2.50. The exactor was worth $46.00 and the triactor paid $190.50.

Added to last week’s runner-up cheque, How Is That Fair’s victory will come close to returning the $40,000 US his owners shelled out to acquire him at last fall’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale.

The talented two-year-old trotting colts head to Windsor Raceway for their second Gold Series on July 27, with those that decide to move down to the Grassroots level waiting until Aug. 4 at Dresden Raceway.

Ontario Sires Stakes action is back at Flamboro Downs on Friday with a $130,000 Gold Final for the Ontario Sires Stakes program’s marquee division, the three-year-old pacing colts.
