WINDSOR, ON — Freshman trotting colt How Is That Fair captured his second straight Gold Final with an impressive front-end effort at Windsor Raceway on Sunday evening.
The Mr Lavec son and trotting specialist Trevor Ritchie took full advantage of their inside post and fired out for the lead as soon as the starting gate’s wings folded. By the :28.3 opening quarter How Is That Fair had wrestled Angus Scot into second spot and from there the colt pulled off to a two length margin that he maintained through the 1:00 half and 1:29.4 three-quarters. Digging in down the stretch, How Is That Fair held off a late charge from Savannah Sirius to score the 1:59.1 victory by half a length.
Savannah Sirius delivered an impressive effort up the outside to earn the runner-up’s share of the $130,000 purse and In Conchnito closed well to finish third for trainer Robert McIntosh of La Salle and his partners Dave Boyle of Bowmanville and CSX Stables of Liberty Center, OH.
With all of the elimination winners handicapped by outside post positions, Windsor Raceway fans wisely sent How Is That Fair off as their top choice. The colt returned $4.40 for a win ticket, $2.60 on a place voucher and $3.00 to show. Local fans also showed their savvy by sending elimination winners Savannah Sirius and In Conchnito off as their second and third choices in the nine horse field. Savannah Sirius returned $3.10 to place and $2.50 to show while In Conchnito paid $3.20. The impressive handicapping resulted in a $12.20 exactor pay out and a $29.20 return on a triactor ticket.
Owned by trainer Scott McEneny of Waterdown and his partners Warren Waxman of Dundas and Alan Alber of Thornhill, How Is That Fair bumped his record to two wins and two seconds in four Gold Series starts and pushed his earnings to $144,263. A $40,000 US investment at the Harrisburg Yearling Sale last November, How Is that Fair takes a commanding lead in the two-year-old trotting colt Super Final standings with 150 points.
How Is That Fair’s next opportunity to pad his point tally comes Aug. 18 at Woodbine Racetrack in the freshman trotting colts’ third Gold Series event.
Ontario Sires Stakes excitement does not return to Windsor Raceway until Sunday, Sept. 21 when the two-year-old trotting fillies arrive at the five-eighths mile oval for their fourth Gold Series skirmish.
