WOODSTOCK, ON — Three-year-old trotting colt I’m Classy extended his Grassroots win streak to four with a gate-to-wire triumph in the fourth of seven $15,000 Grassroots events on tap at Woodstock Raceway on Saturday afternoon.
In spite of a soggy track rated three seconds slower than normal, I’m Classy and driver Gordon Rayner fired straight to the front from Post 1 and rolled through fractions of :31.1, 1:02.3 and 1:32.2 on their way to the 2:02.2 victory. Sent off as the prohibitive favourites, Rayner and the Eager Seelster son hit the wire seven and three-quarter lengths ahead of El Tan and 11 and a half lengths up on Out All Night.
Lorena Chapple of Harley bred and owns I’m Classy, who has put together an impressive record of six wins and three thirds in 14 starts this season, for earnings of $58,501. Harley resident Wayne Langille trains the talented young trotter, who is currently tied for top spot in the division standings — with a perfect total of 200 points — with just two regular season events left on the calendar.
I’m Classy shares top spot in the sophomore trotting colt standings with Heaven And Hall, who also scored his fourth straight Grassroots victory at Woodstock on Saturday. With Mr. OSS’ Dave Wall in the race bike, Heaven And Hall also controlled the pace en route to a 2:02.3 victory over Lord Valentine and The Swing King.
Susanne Kerwood trains Heaven And Hall for Hyatt Holdings Inc. and Canamerica Capital Corp. of Milton. Through 11 starts this season the son of Angus Hall and $143,291 winner L R Alleys Concern boasts an exceptional record of seven wins, one second and two thirds.
Mr. OSS’ made a second appearance in a Grassroots win photo on Saturday, guiding Random Attack to a 2:02.3 victory in the eighth race. Leaving from Post 4, Wall settled the Mr Lavec son on the rail in second as Armbro Decent did all the work on the front end. Heading for the three-quarters Wall sent Random Attack after the lead and the gelding trotted strongly by the leader and then dug in down the stretch to hold off Carscot Nexus by half a length. Deputy Dylan rounded out the top three.
Trainer John Bax of Peterborough shares ownership on Random Attack with Goin To The Show Stable of Peterborough and Lewis Palmer of Oshawa. The win was the gelding’s second of the season and elevated him into a tie for third in the division standings.
Zorgwijk Graduate posted the fastest mile over the rain soaked oval, stopping the teletimer at 2:02.1 in the seventh race. The Armbro Ricochet son and driver Gary Rivest controlled all the fractions and cruised under the wire a comfortable one length ahead of favourite Joey The Jet JT and Incredible Anthony.
The win was Zorgwijk Graduate’s sixth through 21 starts this season and puts the Marnie Bochenek trainee in sixth spot in the division standings. Waterdown residents Rivest and Bochenek share ownership on the colt, who has earned $34,188 this season.
The other Grassroots divisions went to Misterizi in 2:04.3, and a pair of colts trained, driven and owned by Maidstone resident Normand Dessureault — Aforgottendynasty (2:04.4) and Su Lavec (2:05.1). The three-year-old trotting colts resume their Grassroots rivalry on Sunday, Sept. 10 at Clinton Raceway.
Saturday’s program wrapped up Woodstock Raceway’s 2006 Ontario Sires Stakes schedule, which featured exciting performances by the three-year-old pacing colts and trotting colts and the two-year-old pacing fillies. Ontario Sires Stakes action will resume at the Woodstock half-mile in 2007 with a new group of horses looking for Grassroots stardom.
