DUNDAS, ON — On Sunday, Aug. 13, day two of the Gold Series invasion at Flamboro Downs, Ontario’s talented two-year-old pacing colts and trotting colts will command eight of 12 races on the afternoon program.
Among the 33 pacers and 28 trotters vying for a total of $220,232 in Ontario Sires Stakes purses are three colts from the Carl Jamieson stable. Fresh off a one-two finish in the $300,000 Battle of Waterloo at Grand River Raceway on Aug. 7, the Princeton resident will be looking to kick off another successful afternoon with pacing colt Test Flight from Post 1 in the first race.
“He’s a nice horse. He raced really big the other day and just got beat,” says Jamieson of the colt’s runner-up performance to stablemate Warrawee Ideal in the Battle of Waterloo Final.
“He’s a pretty good leaver,” adds the horseman. “He can race in a hole, but he likes it on the front the best. He doesn’t like dirt and stuff hitting him in the face.”
Jamieson and Mississauga resident Ken Henwood share ownership on Test Flight, who boasts a record of one win, two seconds and one third in six starts. Jody Jamieson will pilot the Mach Three son on Sunday and fans will be looking for the explosive early speed that powered the colt to the front in his last three starts.
Twin B Impact will be the second pacing colt out of the barn for Jamieson and the Camotion son will be looking to redeem himself after making a break late in the Battle of Waterloo Final that saw him set back to eighth from seventh.
“He should have been better than he was,” says Jamieson. “I hope he’s better this weekend.”
The veteran horseman shares ownership on Twin B Impact with Jerry Jamieson of Blenheim, Bradley McDonald of Beamsville and Douglas Good of Chatham. The colt captured an elimination of the July 2 Gold Series event at Mohawk Racetrack and finished fifth in the Final one week later, but made a break in his second crack at the province’s top colts on July 16. He rebounded with a runner-up performance in his Battle of Waterloo elimination before running into trouble in last Monday’s Final.
Twin B Impact and Jody Jamieson will start from Post 6 in the third race at Flamboro on Sunday.
Finally, Jamieson will send out novice trotter Think Gold, who will be looking for his second win of the season from Post 5 in Race 5.
The half-brother to former Ontario Sires Stakes champion Pepi Lavec ($801,377) heads into his third Gold Elimination off an error plagued effort in the Aug. 7 Gold Final at Grand River Raceway. Think Gold started from Post 10, the second trailing position, and Jamieson says the colt seemed disoriented by the sea of horses surrounding him at the start.
“He just seemed to be lost in back there,” says the trainer. “He didn’t know where he was. I thought he would get a decent cheque in there, but he run leaving and threw it all off from the start.”
In just five starts Think Gold has seen more than his fair share of unfavourable posts — his win and runner-up finish came on the occasions he was within hailing distance of the rail — so Jamieson hopes he can rebound from the middle of the starting gate on Sunday.
“He’s a nice horse. I thought he was coming along pretty good,” reflects Jamieson, who owns the colt in partnership with Henwood. “He hadn’t made a break before that, so I think he should be all right, I would hope.”
Post time for phase two of the Flamboro Downs Ontario Sires Stakes invasion is 4 pm, with the two-year-old pacing colts featured in Races 1, 3, 4, and 11 and the two-year-old trotting colts stepping onto the battlefield in Races 2, 5, 8, and 9.
