INNISFIL, ON — Fred Brayford will have an opportunity to see one of his horses race close to home when the two-year-old pacing fillies come to Georgian Downs on Tuesday, Sept. 25, but the Alliston resident admits that he is having trouble drumming up much enthusiasm for the outing.
“Quite a disappointment she is,” says Brayford of his two-year-old pacing filly Ms Harrington. “That was the most I’ve ever paid for a horse, and I don’t think I’ll spend that much again unless it is guaranteed to go the next week, and we know it can go.”
Brayford, trainer Carl Jamieson of Princeton, Thomas Kyron of Etobicoke and the George Arthur Stable of Rockwood coughed up $180,000 for Ms Harrington at last fall’s Forest City Yearling Sale and through her first six lifetime starts the filly has posted one win and one second for earnings of $29,908.
The sister to $1.1 million winner Lady Graceful and $303,977 winner Princess Callie will start from Post 6 in the third Grassroots division on Tuesday. She heads into the race off a seventh-place effort in an overnight event at Mohawk Racetrack on Sept. 17, and trainer Jamieson is hoping a course of treatment to address cysts on her reproductive system will add a little snap to Tuesday’s mile.
“Something is bothering her somewhere, I’m hoping that’s what it is,” says Jamieson. “I’ll train her a little tomorrow (Saturday) and see how she is.”
If Ms Harrington fails to step up her game Brayford and Jamieson will have to turn their attention to the other three fillies hailing from the Princeton resident’s barn. Scary Stars will start from Post 4 in the first race, Torrid Pace gets Post 8 in Race 8 and Got The Munchies will start from Post 5 in Race 10.
“Scary Stars was scratched last time because her foot had a pus pocket in there,” notes Jamieson. “She’s all right now.”
That Sept. 3 start was to be the Astreos daughter’s Grassroots debut after a four race run at the Gold Series netted one second, one fourth, one sixth and one ninth. Jamieson shares ownership on Scary Stars with Jerry Jamieson of Blenheim, Norman Paquette of Val Therese and Peter Porter of Port Dover, and will steer the $12,000 yearling himself in the first Grassroots split.
With Post 8, Jamieson expects Torrid Pace will have a tough time adding to the 62 points she has earned in her first two Grassroots starts. The No Pan Intended miss captured her Ontario Sires Stakes debut at Flamboro Downs on Aug. 22 and came back on Sept. 3 at Dresden Raceway with a third-place effort.
Richard Buchanan of St. George Brant owns Torrid Pace, the first foal from $108,980 winner Feverish Hanover, and the final entry of Jamieson’s freshman filly quartet, Got The Munchies.
A sister to Cupcakesnwhipcream, who earned $447,157 under Jamieson’s tutelage, Got The Munchies will start from Post 5 in the last division. Through her first three Grassroots starts the Camluck miss boasts two wins and one third for a total of 112 points and a share of second spot in the two-year-old pacing filly standings.
“She’s a full sister to Cupcakesnwhipcream,” says Jamieson. “And this filly’s not very big either, but she’s a game filly, very game.”
The two-year-old pacing fillies will raise the curtain on Georgian Downs’s Tuesday evening program at 7:35 pm, and continue to entertain fans in Races 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10.
