LONDON, OCT. 20, 2001 — Jody Jamieson was on a hot streak at Western Fair Raceway on Saturday evening, scoring wins in three Grass Roots divisions for the second night in a row.
The young driver, who captured the World Driving Championship on behalf of Canada in July, piloted two-year-old pacing fillies Trys Lucky Lady, Runaway Cutie and Warrawee Delight to victory in their $20,911 divisions.
He kicked off the night with a victory aboard Trys Lucky Lady in a race that was marred by an accident that saw four horses fail to complete the race. Jamieson sent the Camluck filly sharply off the gate from Post 4 and was able to avoid the chaos that erupted behind him. The duo hit the wire in 2:02 with just Classic Al Dragon within hailing distance. Third-place finisher Lofty Operative was well back, as was Seely Bert, the only other filly to complete the mile.
Jamieson’s father Carl of Jarvis trains and shares ownership on Trys Lucky Lady with Dr. Robert Boyce of London, Edward Smith of Mississauga and Karl Ungerman of Toronto. The win boosted the filly’s point total to 21 and moved her into second-place in the division standings heading into the Oct.. 27 Grass Roots Semifinal at Windsor Raceway on Oct. 27.
One race later Jamieson was back in front of the grandstand with Runaway Cutie, who scored the fastest win of the five Grass Roots divisions. Jamieson tucked Runaway Cutie on the rail behind pacesetter Armbro Wallstreet and bided his time, popping out in the stretch for a battle to the wire of epic proportions. When the dust cleared it was Runaway Cutie and Jamieson on top by a neck in 2:00. Garland Seelster rounded out the top three.
Gordon Henry of Belmont bred and owns Runaway Cutie, entrusting her day-to-day conditioning to trainer Ed Hayter. In spite of her win Saturday Runaway Ctuie will not advance to the post season, earning just eight points in four Grass Roots starts.
Jamieson wrapped up his driving hat trick in the last Grass Roots division, steering his father’s Warrawee Delight to the 2:00.4 win off a wire-to-wire performance. Sweetheart Killean was just a neck back second with Catch This Bunny, owned by Catch This Bunny Group of London, third.
The other two divisions went to Grand Elation in 2:01 and Eyes Wide Shut in 2:01.1.
The top 16 point earners now make their way to Windsor Raceway for the Oct.. 27 Semifinal round. The top four finishers from each of two $20,000 Semifinals then advance to the $100,000 Grass Roots Championship at Windsor on Nov.. 3.
Ontario Sires Stakes excitement returns to Western Fair Raceway on Friday. Oct. 26 when the freshman pacing fillies return to the half-mile oval, this time for Gold Series action.
