REXDALE, ON — Only eight fillies lined up to compete for $73,373 in Trillium Series purse money at Woodbine Racetrack on Thursday night, but they put on a spectacular show for fans, pounding down the stretch to a thrilling finish that saw only two lengths separate the winner from the seventh-place finisher.

Canadette and Randy Fritz fired off the starting gate from Post 5 to set the early tempo for the last Trillium Series event on the three-year-old pacing filly calendar. Reaching the opening quarter in :26.3, the Mach Three daughter continued to lead through the :55.2 half and 1:24.4 three-quarters, maintaining a sharp tempo in spite of a track rated two seconds slower than normal.

Jody Jamieson and Appleoosa Hanover were the first to challenge, tipping out from fifth before the half and putting the pressure on Canadette heading for the three-quarters. Jans Luck and Secret Grin followed Appleoosa Hanover up the outside and when the fillies turned for home, Canadette was hanging on to a slim lead.

Heading down the long Woodbine stretch the drivers hit their accelerators, and every filly in the race shifted into high gear. Canadette hung tough, but at the wire Jans Luck was able to stick a neck in front of the pacesetter to claim her fourth win of the season, and her second straight in Trillium action.

Appleoosa Hanover hit the wire half a length back in third, with Secret Grin three-quarters of a length back in fourth, Spun Sugar a length off the pace in fifth, Tanny Mite a length and a half and seventh-place finisher Dress To Suggest just two lengths back. Only fan favourite Milliondollarsmile, who made an early break in stride, was not part of the cavalry charge to the wire.

Milton resident Steve Condren drove Jans Luck to the 1:54.1 victory for trainer John Pentland of Dorchester and owners CJS Stables Inc. of London and Natalie Pentland of Dorchester. In 18 starts this season the Camluck filly has amassed a record of four wins, two seconds and three thirds for earnings of $257,224. In addition to Thursday’s win, and her Sept. 26 Trillium victory at Flamboro Downs, Jans Luck captured her elimination and the final of the season opening Gold Series at Western Fair Raceway.

Ontario’s talented three-year-old pacing fillies will make their last Gold Series stop Oct. 23 and 30 at Georgian Downs, while Grassroots competitors Secret Grin, Canadette and Spun Sugar are gearing up for their Semifinal at Kawartha Downs on Oct. 18.

Provincial stakes action continues at Woodbine Racetrack on Monday, Oct. 15 with a Gold Final showdown between two-year-old pacing colts Keystone Horatio and Deuce Seelster. Post time is 7:40 pm.
