INNISFIL, ON — Just Asign To Me extended his perfect Grassroots record to four in Tuesday evening’s two-year-old pacing colt Grassroots showdown at Georgian Downs.
Up against three other colts ranked among the top 10 in the division, Just Asign To Me and driver Trevor Henry made victory look ridiculously easy, taking control of the race before the :27.4 quarter and maintaining it through the 1:54.2 finish. Local favourite Adventure Bound, owned by Millar Farms of Newmarket, ON, finished three lengths back in second and Hi Sir rounded out the top three.
Just Asign To Me now has 200 points through four Grassroots starts, with Adventure Bound sitting third with 125 points and Hi Sir slipping to fourth with 120 points. The other top 10 point earner in the race, Rileys Luck, faded to seventh in the stretch and failed to add to his point tally.
Listowel, ON resident Bruce Gilkinson trains Just Asign To Me and holds ownership papers on the son of Geartogear through his Cat Sass Stable. Gilkinson acquired Just Asign To Me for $21,500 from an online auction site and first laid eyes on the gelding the day he picked him up in New York State. In spite of some initial skepticism from Gilkinson’s friends and family, Just Asign To Me has proven to be an astute purchase, posting five wins in seven starts and banking $51,780.
With a berth in the Grassroots post season assured, Gilkinson can now choose to take on the Gold Series colts in their Oct. 2 event at Mohawk Racetrack, or continue down the Grassroots path to the Sept. 29 event at Flamboro Downs.
Grand Master and Facebook leap-frogged over Adventure Bound and Hi Sir into second spot in the division standings with victories on Tuesday, boosting their point totals to 150.
Driver Billy Davis and Grand Master opened the evening’s festivities by holding off Camaes Fellow for a quarter length win in 1:57. The Goliath Bayama son has been flawless through his last three starts for owner-breeders Donald Smith and Donna Parker of Hampton, ON and trainer William James. Through eight outings the gelding has three wins, all in Grassroots action, one second and one third for earnings of $46,440.
Medoland J T rounded out the top three in the first $24,000 Grassroots skirmish.
Facebook and driver Doug McNair also opted for a front end strategy to secure their second Grassroots victory. Mach Wheel was hot on their heels at the 1:56.1 finish, while Mister Hill was well back in third.
Gregg McNair conditions Facebook for owner-breeder Bloomingwood Farms Ltd. of Harriston, ON. Through eight starts the son of Mach Three and Wendy My Gal has accumulated a balanced record of two wins, two seconds and two thirds, banking $44,960 for his delighted owners.
Kendal Fresco turned his third lifetime start into a winning one with a come from behind effort in the fourth division. The Life Sign son and driver Michael Whelan hit the wire three-quarters of a length ahead of Stolen Car and Rez Rockstar, halting the Georgian Downs teletimer at 1:56.3. Scott McNiven trains Kendal Fresco, who now has one win, one second and one third to his credit through three starts. Kimberley McNiven of Putnam, ON, Shirley Griffin of St. Thomas, ON and James Kirk of Ingersoll, ON share ownership on the youngster.
The final Grassroots trophy went home with Ultimate Luck, who accelerated away from the field around the final turn and hit the wire three and three-quarter lengths on top in 1:55. Wit And Wisdom and Classic Call picked up the second and third-place finisher’s share of the Grassroots purse.
Owned by Ultimate Stable of Greater Lakeburn, NB, Ultimate Luck has four wins and one third in six starts to his credit. Sifroi Melanson conditions the son of Camluck and Village Jericho.
The two-year-old pacing colts make their second last Grassroots start at Flamboro Downs on Sept. 29, with the season wrapping up one week later in Windsor. The top 16 point earners will advance to the Oct. 15 Semifinal, with the top four finishers from each $30,000 Semifinal earning a berth in the $100,000 Championship on Oct. 23.
Ontario Sires Stakes excitement continues at Georgian Downs this Friday evening with eight Grassroots divisions for the two-year-old trotting fillies.
