WINDSOR, ON — Killingly Funny scored one for the local side on Wednesday evening, delivering an impressive come from behind victory in the first of six Grassroots divisions at Windsor Raceway.

Owned by Dennis and Janet Fairall of Windsor and Kelvin Sivyer of Tillsonburg, Killingly Funny started from Post 8 and spent most of the race moving up the outside on the heels of fan favourite Number One Path.

In rein to Amherstburg resident Brad Forward, the three-year-old pacing filly eased off the starting gate into last place and then forged up the outside after Number One Path before the halfway marker. Fifth by the three-quarters, Killingly Funny circled around the stalling favourite on the final turn and then powered by pacesetter JM Lucky Girl to nab the 1:54 win.

JM Lucky Girl finished one and a quarter lengths back in second, while pocket sitter Armbro Cinema landed the third-place finisher’s share of the $18,014 purse.

The win was the third straight for Killingly Funny, who is trained by Brock McEachern. The Grinfromeartoear lass boasts a record of nine wins, two seconds and two thirds through 21 starts but, with one event remaining in the regular season, has only garnered 55 Grassroots points and sits well shy of a berth in the Oct. 7 Semifinal.

In Race 7 Easy Operator continued her advance on the point leaders with her third straight Grassroots victory. The Armbro Operative daughter and Windsor reinsman Kevin Wallis went straight to the front from Post 2 and laid down fractions of :26, :55.2 and 1:25, then fought off challenger Moonlit Tori to score a half length win in 1:53.2. Angelina Seelster was three lengths behind the leaders in third.

Joe Stutzman trains Easy Operator for breeder William Varney of Bangor, ME. The pacer has been flawless in three Grassroots starts this season, tallying a total of 150 points for sole ownership of fourth spot in the division standings.

Easy Operator’s Grassroots win was the second of the evening for Wallis and Stutzman. The veteran horsemen also teamed up in Race 5 to land Curious Cutie her first Ontario Sires Stakes trophy. Like her stablemate Curious Cutie did all the work on the front end, laying down fractions of :27, :59 and 1:27.1, but this time Wallis never had to glance over his shoulder as the Astreos daughter cruised to a three length win in 1:55.3.

E Business, owned by Larry MacNeil of LaSalle and trainer James Koelln of Cambridge, finished three lengths back in second and Gunshy was two more to the rear in third.

Zeljko Bosnjak of Grand Valley owns Curious Cutie, who improved her record to three wins, three seconds and one third in 15 starts and moved to within 12 points of the current cut off for the Top 16.

Last year’s Grassroots champions Dave Wall and Borderlinegorgious moved into top spot in the division standings with a 1:54.2 front end victory in the tenth race. Trained by Dean Wall for his parents’ Wall Tyme Stables Inc. of Komoka, the Rambaran daughter has three wins and two seconds to her credit through the Grassroots regular season for a total of 200 points.

Witness To Fame finished half a length behind Borderlinegorgious and Sweet Addiction was three lengths back in third.

The other two Grassroots divisions went to Youthful Seelster in 1:53.2 and Rustle N Sizzle in 1:55.3.

On Sunday, Sept. 25 Ontario’s talented three-year-old pacing fillies wrap up their Grassroots regular season at Dresden Raceway, while Windsor Raceway plays host to the two-year-old pacing colts in their fourth Gold Series event.
