WINDSOR, ON — Local favourite St Lads Seraph delivered her third straight Grassroots victory on Wednesday evening, circling the Windsor Raceway oval in 1:56.2.
Owned by trainer Sandra Spencer and Kathleen Brogan, both of Windsor, the two-year-old pacing filly was an impressive gate-to-wire victor in the first $27,499 Grassroots event. St Lads Seraph and driver Jason Brewer easily controlled the race through the first half, fought off a challenge at the three-quarters, and then coasted home one and one-quarter length winners over Saramotion and Slaley.
The Northern Luck daughter boasts a record of three wins, one second and two thirds in seven starts, and wraps up the Grassroots regular season in second spot in the point standings. The top 16 point earners from the six regular season Grassroots events will compete at Kawartha Downs on Oct. 20 in a pair of $30,000 Semifinals, with the top four finishers from each Semifinal moving on to the $100,000 Grassroots Championship at Kawartha on Oct. 27.
Leading the charge to Kawartha Downs is Onyx Killean, who completed her first provincial campaign with a flawless record of five wins in five starts. The Astreos daughter delivered an impressive come from behind effort in the third Grassroots division on Wednesday, starting from Post 8 and sitting on the outside through the first half of the mile before taking command and sailing off to a one length victory in 1:56.4.
No Pan Intended daughters Kims Intended and Intended To Fly rounded out the top three behind Onyx Killean.
Gary Wallace drives and trains the talented Onyx Killean for Liam Wallace of Troy. The Wallace’s have sent the filly behind the starting gate just six times this season, in five Grassroots events and an Oct. 1 overnight at Mohawk Racetrack where she finished second in a 1:52.1 mile.
A Fiesty Affair was the winner of that Oct. 1 overnight, and the Camluck filly came up trumps for the fourth straight week in Wednesday’s eighth race. In rein to Brad Forward, A Fiesty Affair powered off the starting gate from Post 7 and proceeded to march through a :26.4 opening quarter, a :56.1 half and a 1:25 three-quarters, before accelerating home to the 1:54.2 victory.
Got The Munchies finished one and three-quarter lengths back, with Elm Grove Camlady another length back in third.
Bill Elliott trains A Fiesty Affair for owner and breeder Robert Hamather of Exeter. Through 12 starts the young pacer has amassed six wins and one third for earnings of $84,905 and heads into the post season in fourth spot in the division standings.
The other Grassroots division went to Randy Waples and Shipps Bikini, who delivered a game effort to earn the three-quarter length win over Kingfishers Gypsy and Torrid Pace in 1:57.
Trained by John Kopas for the Harold G. Shipp Stable of Mississauga, Shipps Bikini leapt from forty-third into a two-way tie for the last spot in the post season with the victory. Wednesday’s win was the No Pan Intended daughter’s second straight trip to the winner’s circle, but her first in Grassroots action, where she had scored one third and one fourth leading into the regular season finale.
Ontario Sires Stakes excitement continues to build at Windsor Raceway, as fans await the return of the outstanding two-year-old trotting colts this Sunday, Oct. 14.
