DUNDAS, ON — Mr Joe Sixpack stepped off a personal best mile at Flamboro Downs on Thursday to post a win for his new connections and wrap up the Grassroots regular season in second spot in the point standings.

The two-year-old trotting colt was rolled off the gate from Post 2 by driver Scott Zeron and was just a nose behind Frenchmen when that colt hit the quarter pole in :29.3. By the :59.4 half Mr Joe Sixpack had established a two length lead, and although Psychic Turmoil carved that down to one length by the 1:30 three-quarters, the pacesetter had lots more in the tank.

When Zeron asked Mr Joe Sixpack for a last burst of speed, the fan favourite responded with a sharp finishing kick that propelled him down the stretch to a seven length victory in a personal best 2:00. Psychic Turmoil picked up the second-place share of the $24,000 Grassroots purse and longshot Frenchmen rounded out the top three.

Oakville, ON resident Zeron piloted Mr Joe Sixpack to the victory for owner Louis Arsenault of Freelton, ON, who purchased the son of Striking Sahbra on Oct. 1. Shane Arsenault trains the colt, who wrapped up his Grassroots campaign with a record of two wins, two seconds and one fourth for earnings of $37,920 and a point tally of 158, second only to division leader Bob From Brussels.

Bob From Brussels returned to the Grassroots program on Thursday after taking a crack at the Gold Series colts on Sept. 25 and was clearly none the worse for wear from the effort. The Here Comes Herbie son and trainer-driver Lyle MacArthur cruised along on the outside for much of the mile before sprinting away from the field to a six and three-quarter length victory in 2:00.1.

Pacesetter Starlitestarbrite settled for second, while Tymal Lennon recovered from an early break to finish third.

Through four Grassroots starts Bob From Brussels boasts an impressive record of three wins and one second for a point total of 175. St. George Brant, ON resident MacArthur conditions the colt for Anne Shunock of Brussels, ON, and he is named in honour of breeder Bob Pearson of Brussels, ON.

Major Herbie moved into third spot in the division standings with a come from behind effort in the last Grassroots division. Another son of Here Comes Herbie, Major Herbie and trainer-driver Wayne Henry reeled in Frill Seeker down the stretch to score the 2:01 victory. Meadowview Arty closed well to finish third.

After winning a Gold Elimination early in the season, Major Herbie found his groove in the Grassroots program where he scored three wins and one fifth in five starts. Henry trains the colt for his partners in the Henry Stable of Arthur, ON and Daniel McCann of Parkhill, ON.

Thursday’s victory was also responsible for Assignment’s move up the point standings. The Ken Warkentin son moved from eighth to fourth in the standings with his five and a half length victory over P C La Mousse and Muskoka. The 2:01.2 matched Assignment’s personal best clocking.

Ted Jacobs trains and drives Assignment for owner-breeder Glen Campbell of Kingston, ON. Through eight starts the colt boasts an impressive record of seven wins and earnings of $48,000. His only loss came in the Grassroots season opener on July 15 at Hiawatha Horse Park where he finished sixth over a sloppy oval.

The other Grassroots trophy went home with Over And Out, who sailed home to a 2:01.3 victory over Put Your Dukes Up and fan favourite Idle Time. Mark MacDonald engineered the victory for trainer Ira Fisher and owner-breeder Willow Pond LLC of Hewlett, NY.

The top 16 point earners will now head to Western Fair Raceway on Oct. 15 for two $30,000 Grassroots Semifinals. The top four finishers from each Semifinal will earn a shot at the $100,000 Grassroots Championship at Western Fair on Oct. 23.

Flamboro Downs fans will watch two more divisions wrap up their Grassroots regular series this weekend. On Friday at 6 pm the three-year-old trotting colts will battle in five $24,000 Grassroots divisions, and on Saturday’s 1 pm matinee program, the three-year-old pacing colts will duel in four Grassroots splits.
