GLOUCESTER, ON — Locally owned colts captured two of five Grassroots divisions at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday evening, starting with a major upset by Lubbock in the sixth race.
Heading into Sunday’s $20,000 skirmish, Lubbock was zero for four and had made breaks in all but one of his starts. Rideau Carleton fans rightly sent the son of Angus Hall off as the second longest shot on the board, but someone forgot to inform the three-year-old trotting colt that he had no shot in a field laden with four winners from the Grassroots season opener.
Starting from Post 3, driver Gord Brown eased Lubbock off the starting gate and settled into sixth as fan favourite P C Moonshine took the field to opening fractions of :29.2 and :59. Just after the half Brown sent Lubbock up the outside, and by the 1:28.2 three-quarters the gelding was circling three-wide around the leaders.
Turning for home Lubbock was sitting third and gaining, and when the dust settled at the wire the longshot had claimed a quarter length victory over Windsun Pride and Striker Springs in 1:59.4.
Rene Laarman trains Lubbock for Melvin Hartman of Ottawa and breeders Little E LLC of New York, NY.
Two races later fans sent local colt Mccarron off as their top choice from Post 4, and the Angus Hall son made his 1:58.4 triumph look like an afternoon stroll. Trainer Mark Steacy piloted Mccarron to his second win in four sophomore starts for owners A K Malik Stable of Ottawa, David McDonald of Cornwall, David Reid of Glenburnie and Dr. Malcolm Man Son Hing of Campbell River, BC.
Badge Of Honor earned the second-place share of the $20,000 purse, while Sonny Mcdreamee overcame an early break to claim third in the fastest mile of the five Grassroots divisions.
None of the winners from the Grassroots season opener at Western Fair Raceway in May were able to pick up a second piece of Ontario Sires Stakes hardware, and it was a tough night for favourites. The only other top choice to find his way to the winner’s circle was Zeerojan in Race 4.
Starting from Post 6, driver Anthony Haughan opted for a come-from-behind trip with Zeerojan, and the pair enjoyed second-over scenery behind P L Broadway Joe before reaching the front and accelerating off to a three and a half length victory. Kangamangus and Jack Man also closed well to earn second and third-place honours.
Oakville resident Rick Zeron trains Zeerojan for his partners Joe Arcaro of Laval, QC and Rojan Stables of Wilmington, DE. Sunday’s 2:01 win was the Kadabra son’s second in five starts this season.
The other $20,000 Grassroots divisions went to Long Ago in 2:00.2 and Canadian Frontier in 1:59.4.
The three-year-old trotting colts make their third Grassroots start on July 6 at Dresden Raceway, while Rideau Carleton Raceway will roll out the red carpet for the two-year-old pacing fillies in their second Gold Series event on July 27.
