CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Luck Of Michelle made Mohawk Racetrack fans into believers on Monday night, floating around the Campbellville oval to her second Gold Final victory and extending her unbeaten streak to five.

As he did in last week’s Gold Elimination, driver Mike Saftic eased the two-year-old pacing filly off the starting gate from Post 2 and was settled in third as Spun Sugar took the field to a :27.2 opening quarter. Heading toward the halfway marker, Saftic sent Luck Of Michelle after the lead and the filly was one and a half lengths on top when the teletimer flashed :56.

Luck Of Michelle maintained that one and a half length margin through the 1:24.2 three-quarters and cruised under the wire one and a quarter lengths on top in a smart 1:53.4. Elimination winner Canadette delivered an impressive effort to overcome Post 9 and claim the runner-up share of the $130,000 Gold Final purse, finishing closer than any other filly to the high flying Luck Of Michelle. Breathdefying matched her elimination result with a third-place effort on Monday.

With just five starts on her resume, Luck Of Michelle’s accomplishments are already an impressive read. The daughter of Camluck and Michelle’s Destiny won a pair of qualifiers at Mohawk in early June and then made her racing debut in a Flamboro Breeders Stake division at Flamboro Downs on June 24, where she shattered the world record for two-year-old pacing fillies on a half-mile track with her 1:53.3 victory and trounced her peers by 13 lengths.

In her Ontario Sires Stakes debut, Luck Of Michelle lowered Grand River Raceway’s track record for freshman fillies with a 1:55.2 romp that saw her hit the wire 10 lengths ahead of the field. Back at Grand River on July 10 for her first Gold Final, the filly cruised to a three length win in 1:56.3.

In last week’s Gold Elimination at Mohawk, Saftic did not hustle Luck Of Michelle off the starting gate as fast as he did over the half-mile ovals, but the outcome was still the same as they hit the wire two and three-quarter lengths ahead of their nearest rival in 1:54.4.

Through five starts Luck Of Michelle has already earned her owners, Karen Carroll of Shedden and Natalie Pentland of Dorchester, $179,794. John Pentland trains the talented young pacer, who was a $20,000 US bargain at last fall’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale.

Next up on the precocious youngster’s agenda is the third Gold Series event, which gets under way on Sunday, July 30 at Windsor Raceway. The track record at Windsor Raceway is 1:53.3, a standard set in 1998 by Ontario Sires Stakes darling Odies Fame and matched by two other provincial stars, Precious Delight in 2001 and Lady Dillinger in 2004.

The Ontario Sires Stakes program now takes a two week hiatus from Mohawk Racetrack, returning Monday, Aug. 7 with Gold Eliminations for the three-year-old trotting fillies.
