LEXINGTON, KY — Somebeachsomewhere delighted his owners and impressed his fans with the 1:46.4 world record he clocked in the Bluegrass Stakes last Saturday, but trainer Brent MacGrath says the pacer seems even sharper heading into this weekend’s Tattersalls Pace.

“He’s having a good week, he came out of the race really good,” says MacGrath. “And he should be a little sharper just having had that race. We’ll train him a little bit Thursday (Oct. 2).”

Somebeachsomewhere and Guelph resident Paul MacDonell will start from Post 3 in their Tattersalls Pace division, and the pair have once again drawn into a different division than Art Official, the only colt to ever reach a finish line in front of Somebeachsomewhere. Meadowlands Pace winner Art Official will start from Post 1 in the second $293,000 Tattersalls division.

Somebeachsomewhere’s 1:46.4 mile last weekend set a record for a three-year-old pacing colt in a pari-mutuel race, equalled the fastest ever mile in a pari-mutuel race — set by a five-year-old Holborn Hanover at The Meadowlands in 2006 — and fell just short of the all-time Standardbred speed mark of 1:46.1 established by then five-year-old Cambest in a time trial at Springfield, IL in 1993.

With a race under his belt — and another week passing since the Mach Three son was treated for sickness — Somebeachsomewhere may be prepared to write his name into every category in the history books. According to the long range forecast, the weather for Saturday afternoon in Lexington, KY is expected to be sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

“We have the record, so we’ll see what happens,” says MacGrath about the possibility of taking a stab at a second world speed mark.

The Truro, NS resident trains Somebeachsomewhere for his partners in the Schooner Stables of Bible Hill, NS — James Bagnell of Truro, NS; Pamela Dean of Londonderry, NS; Reg Petitpas of Shediac Bridge, NB; and Truro, NS residents Garry Pye and Stuart Rath — and he says there was a sizeable Maritime contingent in the stands last weekend.

“Yeah, there was a big crowd here, that’s a good thing though,” says the amiable horseman. “There were a lot of people from Ontario too.”

The Ontario-sired superhorse was met in the winner’s circle by a group representing the Ontario Sires Stakes program and presented with a commemorative cooler. MacGrath says the colt suffered through the ensuing photo scrum without protest, but has not developed into an easy-going cover model like his trotting counterpart Deweycheatumnhowe.

“He puts up with it,” notes MacGrath wryly. “As long as he’s mastered the art of getting down the homestretch, that’s the main thing.”

The connections MacGrath made while he was stabled in Ontario this summer have eased Somebeachsomewhere’s transition to life in the Bluegrass State. The colt is stabled at John Magnusson’s ACL Farm in Paris, KY and is enjoying all the luxuries of home in his temporary digs.

“One of John’s daughters is at the training centre I’m at in Ontario, he had some people over from Sweden for the Canadian Trotting Classic, and when they came out to the farm they wanted to see Beach,” explains MacGrath. “We got talking and he invited me to stay at his farm. It’s worked out good.

“We’re very happy here. He’s getting out every day in the paddock, he jogs every day, and we take him in to The Red Mile to train him,” he continues. “It’s a good spot. They’ve been very obliging.”

All of which is contributing to the colt’s mental and physical health and making the possibility of another world record seem well within Somebeachsomewhere’s reach.

The Ontario-sired wonder colt will be joined at The Red Mile on Saturday by recent three-year-old trotting colt Gold Final champion Define The World, whose connections anted up the $50,000 supplement to enter him in the $684,000 Kentucky Futurity. MacDonell will also drive Define The World, who will square off against Deweycheatumnhowe from Post 5 in the first heat of the Futurity. Deweycheatumnhowe, who is 19 for 20 lifetime, will start from Post 10.

A horse must win two heats to be declared the winner of the third jewel of the trotting triple crown, and with only 10 entries in the first heat, every horse will be eligible to return to the second heat.

Define The World, trained by Peterborough resident John Bax for owner and breeder Al Libfeld of Pickering, heads into his first Grand Circuit start riding a four race win streak, and both Bax and MacDonell say the Duke Of York son thinks he is the king of the hill right now. The Futurity will be the gelding’s first test against the top colts in North America.

Post time at The Red Mile for Saturday’s talent laden program is 12:30 pm, with the first heat of the Kentucky Futurity slated as Race 9 and the second heat going postward as the twelfth race. If a third heat is required, it will follow the rest of the program as Race 15. Somebeachsomewhere will light up the Kentucky oval in Race 11, while the second Tattersalls Pace division will be contested in Race 13.
