CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Mach Dreamer got a flawless steer from Oakville, ON resident Rick Zeron on Saturday evening and swept down the Mohawk Racetrack stretch to claim his first $130,000 Gold Final victory.
Starting from Post 1, Zeron did not engage in the opening quarter scrum, preferring to sit on the rail in fifth while BP Chimo, Dalhousie Dave and Keystone Raptor jockeyed for control of the pace. BP Chimo logged the opening eighth in :12.4, but was overtaken by Dalhousie Dave, who led the three-year-old pacing colts to the :26.4 quarter and then handed the baton off to Keystone Raptor before the :54.4 half.
Heading for the halfway marker Big Bay Point stepped to the outside, and Zeron opted to slide Mach Dreamer in behind the heavy favourite. Keystone Raptor rang up a 1:22.4 three-quarters tussling with Big Bay Point, and as the field rolled off the final turn the leaders started to fade. Zeron tipped Mach Dreamer out from behind Big Bay Point and the colt charged down the stretch to an impressive two and one-quarter length victory in a personal best 1:50.1.
Dalhousie Dave edged up the inside into the runner-up position, while BP Chimo roared up behind him to be third. Keystone Raptor and Big Bay Point faded back to ninth and tenth.
Sunderland, ON resident Murray Brethour trains Mach Dreamer for owner and breeder Stephen Scarff of Halifax, NS. The son of Mach Three and Boy Meets Girl also captured his elimination last weekend with a sharp come from behind effort and currently sits second in the three-year-old pacing colt standings with 100 points. In 13 starts the colt has accumulated four wins, three seconds, one third and $183,327 in earnings. The youngster will have an opportunity to defend his Gold Final title when the sophomore pacing colts return to Mohawk on Aug. 27.
Mohawk Racetrack fans were also treated to a pair of Gold Elimination performances by the three-year-old trotting fillies. In the first $40,000 elimination, fan favourite Emmylou Who ran off on the field through the final quarter and was able to hang on for a one and three-quarter length victory in 1:55.3. Ipromisenottotell sprinted from the back of the field to grab the second-place finisher’s share and Kenu Dance was two more lengths back in third.
Also advancing to next weekend’s Gold Final from the first elimination were Angostura and Miss Dangles.
Lyle MacArthur trains and drives Emmylou Who for Linda Wellwood of St. George Brant, ON, Tammy Aspden of Caistor Centre, ON, Anne Shunock of Dorchester, ON and Diane Ingham of Mount Pleasant, ON. The ultra-consistent daughter of Ken Warkentin and Emerald Seelster has not missed a cheque in 11 sophomore starts, posting two wins, four second, two thirds, two fourths and one fifth for earnings of $257,438.
In the second elimination Cross Of Lorraine suffered her first defeat of the summer as No Magic To It laid down a :27.3 final quarter to reel in the heavy favourite. Cross Of Lorraine clocked fractions of :13.3, :28, :58, 1:27.4 and 1:41.3 but could not hold off the charge from the pocket sitting No Magic To It and had to settle for second.
Tommi My Girl trotted into third, with Random Destiny and Highland Strikes completing the field for next Saturday’s $130,000 Gold Final.
Acton, ON resident Trevor Ritchie piloted No Magic To It to the 1:55.3 victory for trainer Per Henriksen’s ASA Farm of Norwood, ON and Thomas Nurmi of Washington, DC. The daughter of Kadabra and SJs Sentiment started her Ontario Sires Stakes season off in the Grassroots program, scoring a win at Hiawatha Horse Park on June 10, and then moved into the big leagues for the Canadian Breeders Championship, finishing second to Cross Of Lorraine in the July 16 elimination and fifth in the July 24 final.
The half-sister to $273,663 winner Guilford and $209,080 winner Windsun Pride has four wins, one second and one third to her credit through 10 starts and has earned $71,744. No Magic To It will make her bid for a second Gold Series triumph from Post 8 in next week’s battle, while Emmylou Who starts from Post 1 and defending champion Cross Of Lorraine gets Post 5.
