CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Before the sixth race at Mohawk Racetrack on Sunday, trainer Ron O’Neill said he thought Mach You And Me would be heard from during the $59,375 Gold Elimination. Not only was the three-year-old pacing filly heard from, she trumpeted her arrival as a serious player on the Gold Series scene with an impressive 1:51.2 victory.
With Paul MacDonell in the race bike Mach You And Me eased out of Post 1 and settled in fourth as Canadette took the field of eight to a :27.1 opening quarter. The pair continued to sit fourth as Luck Of Michelle pressed the pace to the :56 half, and then circled up to the front before reaching the 1:24.1 three-quarters.
Flying around the final turn, Mach You And Me had put almost three lengths between herself and the field, and she continued without pressure down the stretch to a one and three-quarter length victory. Milliondollarsmile, owned by Morris Wright and Brett Wright of Hamilton and Connor Wright of Dundas, finished second and Stabilo was six lengths behind in third. Canadette and Quail Seelster rounded out the top five.
The win was the second straight, and the third this season, for Mach You And Me, who is owned by Guelph resident MacDonell and breeders Carwin Stables of Orono. The Mach Three daughter scored her first win at Mohawk on May 28, finished second by a neck on June 4 and then picked up a 1:52.3 win on June 14. Those three efforts impressed Mohawk fans enough for them to send her off as their top choice in Sunday’s Gold Elimination, her first appearance in the Ontario Sires Stakes program.
Cambridge resident O’Neill will spend the next week preparing Mach You And Me for her first $130,000 Gold Final where she will face the cream of the remarkably talented sophomore pacing filly division, including the other elimination winner Michelles Power.
Michelles Power picked up her second straight victory, and third of the year, with an impressive gate-to-wire effort in Race 3. Starting from Post 7, the Camluck miss and driver Jody Jamieson loafed through fractions of :28, :57.2 and 1:25.4, and then laid down a :26.4 last quarter to claim a two and one-quarter length decision over Jans Luck in 1:52.3.
Simply Mavelous picked up the third-place finisher’s share, while Trim Hanover and Michelleanas Angel also advanced to the Gold Final.
Trained by William Elliott for owner and breeder Jeffrey Snyder of New York, NY, Michelles Power now sports a record of three wins, one second and one third in five sophomore starts. As a two-year-old the talented pacer posted a record of six wins, four second and four third for earnings of $479,019.
