CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Mohawk Racetrack fans were witness to an epic battle between another crop of exceptional two-year-old pacing fillies on Monday night, as the Gold finalists rocked around the Campbellville oval just a whisker shy of an Ontario Sires Stakes record.
Fan favourites Lilbitfasternow and driver Mark MacDonald rocketed off the starting gate from Post 3 and led the talented field of fillies to a :27 opening quarter. They were quickly challenged by Mike Saftic and Find A Penny, who took command before the :55.2 and maintained the frenetic pace to the 1:23.4 three-quarters.
Turning for home Find A Penny was holding onto a half length lead over Lilbitfasternow, but the race was far from over as the fillies from the back of the pack were starting to rev things up. Although Lilbitfasternow and Find A Penny fought hard down the stretch, the tiring pacesetters were no match for the fresh legs, and :27.4 finishing kick, of Maddam Luck.
Starting from Post 9 veteran reinsman Steve Condren was content to let Maddam Luck sit on the outside at the back of the pack, while the pacesetters fought their high speed war. Nine lengths off the pace until the halfway marker, Maddam Luck made measured progress through the third-quarter and then launched her assault down the stretch, sprinting home faster than any other horse with the exception of Shake That Junk, who closed from ninth at the top of the stretch to finish fourth for trainer James Dean and Dr. David Powell of Campbellville, driver Jody Jamieson of Cambridge and P. and J. Stable of Mississauga.
Maddam Luck hit the wire one length up on Lilbitfasternow and Find A Penny in 1:52.4, just one-fifth of a second off the Ontario Sires Stakes record shared by Serious Comfort and Lady Dillinger.
Wallacetown resident William Hamm trains Maddam Luck for his partners Craig Turner and Mhairi Kersel of Ingersoll and Craig Moore of Woodstock. Turner also bred the daughter of Northern Luck and Mattercycle, who finished second in her elimination last week to Find A Penny.
Qualified on June 1, Maddam Luck scored a 1:56.1 win at Hiawatha Horse Park on June 14 and made a break in a July 5 event at Hiawatha before making her provincial debut last Monday. The filly will compete in her second Gold Series event on July 30 at Grand River Raceway.
Ontario Sires Stakes action resumes at Mohawk Racetrack on Thursday, Aug. 2 with Gold Series Eliminations for the exciting two-year-old trotting colts, who tied the track record at Grand River Raceway in their first Gold Final.
