WINDSOR, NOV. 2, 2001 — Richard McNeill and Meanstoyourdreams surprised Windsor Raceway fans when they posted a 2:01.2 victory in the two-year-old trotting filly Gold Final on Friday night.
McNeill, who shares ownership on Meanstoyourdreams with Bentley Clark of Brantford and Mike Henowick of Hamilton, settled the Royal Strength filly in sixth through the early stages of the race. Symphony Hanover and Randy Kerr rolled the field through fractions of :28.1, :59 and 1:29 before McNeill and Meanstoyourdreams came flying down the stretch to post the one and one half length win.
Dats Dixie and Cheridan Star, owned by Daniel Johnson of Wallaceburg, also closed hard to catch the tiring pacesetter and earn the second and third-place finisher’s share of the $100,000 purse.
Sent off as the longest shot in the nine horse field, Meanstoyourdreams returned $115.90 to win, $43.10 to place and $15.40 to show with the upset. Dats Dixie paid $14.90 and $6.80, while Cheridan Star returned $5.10 to show. The 4 – 3 exactor was worth $489.10 and the 4 – 3 – 2 triactor paid $1,375.60.
The win was Meanstoyourdreams’ first of the season and came in her third start since McNeill added trotting hopples to her equipment. Prior to an Oct. 10 qualifier the filly had been struggling with her gait, making breaks in all but her first start.
The victory also pushed the filly’s balance sheet into the black. A $20,000 yearling purchase at last fall’s Forest City Sale, Meanstoyourdreams now has $58,057 in the bank.
In spite of earning 58 Super Final points Meanstoyourdreams will not be eligible to the $250,000 season finale because she made just one appearance in the Gold Series. The top 10 fillies with at least two Gold Elimination starts will advance to the Super Final Championship at Mohawk Racetrack on Saturday, Nov. 10. Fans who cannot make it to Mohawk for the $2 million event can catch all the action on cable television’s The Score from 9 to 11 pm EDT.
Ontario Sires Stakes action returns to Windsor Raceway on Saturday night (Nov. 3) when the five-eighths mile oval plays host to the $400,000 two-year-old Grassroots Championships and a $100,000 Gold Final for the two-year-old pacing colts.
