CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Country entertainer Charlie Major delivered a Canada Day concert at Mohawk Racetrack on Sunday evening and his song Feelin’ Kinda Lucky Tonight’ could have been the theme song for three-year-old pacing filly Milliondollarsmile, who captured her first Gold Series victory with a track and Ontario Sires Stakes record performance.

The Million Dollar Cam daughter and driver Randy Waples used Post 2 to their advantage in the $130,000 contest, landing in third on the rail behind pacesetter Canadette and Trim Hanover. As Canadette took the fillies through sharp opening fractions of :26.4 and :54.4, Waples was content to sit on the rail with Milliondollarsmile, but he was keeping a sharp eye out for favourite Michelles Power, who was tucked in behind him in fourth, and elimination winner Mach You And Me, who was sitting fifth.

As the fillies swept down the backstretch Waples decided to brave the first over move with Milliondollarsmile rather than wait for Michelles Power and Mach You And Me to pass him by, and the pair had taken a short lead as the teletimer flashed up the 1:23 three-quarter clocking. With Michelles Power and Mach You And Me hot on his heels, Waples pushed the accelerator to the floor and Milliondollarsmile responded with an impressive finishing kick that earned her a two length victory in a track and Ontario Sires Stakes record 1:50.2.

Mach You And Me, owned by Carwin Stables of Orono and driver Paul MacDonell of Guelph, closed hard to finish second and Simply Mavelous was third for the second straight week.

Milliondollarsmile’s 1:50.2 clocking peeled one-fifth of a second off Mohawk’s track record for three-year-old pacing fillies and one-fifth of a second off the provincial record for sophomore fillies on a seven-eighths mile oval.

Although the win was the filly’s first in Ontario Sires Stakes action, Milliondollarsmile is no stranger to the winner’s circle. Through 10 starts this season the Shawn Robinson trainee boasts a record of four wins, two second and two thirds.

Morris Wright and Brett Wright of Hamilton and Connor Wright of Dundas selected Milliondollarsmile out of the 2005 Harrisburg Yearling Sale for $47,000 US. Last season the filly made just four starts, earning two runner-up placings, but she has more than returned her purchase price this season, tallying $129,516 for her delighted owners.

Milliondollarsmile will not have an opportunity to add another Ontario Sires Stakes trophy to her collection until the sophomore pacing fillies resume Gold Series action on Aug. 3 at Rideau Carleton Raceway. However, Mohawk Racetrack fans will have another opportunity to see some of Ontario’s finest Standardbreds in action this Friday, July 6, when the three-year-old trotting fillies convene at the Campbellville oval for their second Gold Series event of the season.
