DUNDAS, ON — Ontario’s talented three-year-old pacing fillies put on an impressive show for Flamboro Downs fans on Wednesday evening in a pair of $36,056 Trillium Series divisions.
In the first contest Canadette got the quickest jump off the starting gate and led the field of seven to a :28.4 opening quarter and a :57.4 half before surrendering the lead to fan favourite Milliondollarsmile. On top by half a length at the 1:25.4 three-quarters, Milliondollarsmile disposed of Canadette in the stretch, pulling away to a one and three-quarter length victory in 1:54.2. Just Her Way completed the triactor, three and one-quarter lengths behind the leaders.
The win was the first for Milliondollarsmile since her Canadian Breeders Championship triumph at Mohawk Racetrack on July 28. Through 17 starts the Million Dollar Cam lass boasts an impressive record of eight wins, three seconds and three thirds for earnings of $332,980. In addition to the Canadian Breeders title, the filly captured the July 1 Gold Final at Mohawk.
Morris and Brett Wright of Hamilton and Connor Wright of Dundas are the three generation ownership group on Milliondollarsmile, who is trained by Jarvis resident Shawn Robinson and was driven to victory on Wednesday by Randy Waples of Milton.
The second Trillium Series split saw the fans’ top choice Jans Luck carve out fractions of :27.1, :56.2, and 1:24.4, then dig in down the stretch to hold off a charging Whitesand Scarlet by a scant head. Secret Grin circled three-wide at the three-quarter pole to claim the third-place finisher’s share, reaching the finish post three lengths behind the duelling leaders.
Campbellville resident Mike Saftic piloted Jans Luck to the 1:54.2 victory, her first appearance in the winner’s circle since capturing the season opening Gold Final at Western Fair Raceway on June 1. Trained by John Pentland for CJS Stables Inc. of London, and his wife Natalie Pentland of Dorchester, Jans Luck has amassed three wins, two seconds and three thirds in 16 starts this season, for earnings of $220,538.
Although the Trillium Series is open to fillies sired by stallions standing outside Ontario’s borders, on Wednesday the American-breds were relegated to fifth and lower by their remarkably talented Ontario-sired peers. The sophomore pacing fillies square off in one more Trillium event this season, meeting at Woodbine Racetrack on Oct. 11.
Ontario Sires Stakes excitement continues at Flamboro Downs next Wednesday, Oct. 3 when the sharp three-year-old trotting fillies roll their Grassroots show onto the half-mile oval for what promises to be an intense regular season finale — the last opportunity the fillies have to pick up points before the Oct. 18 Grassroots Semifinal.
