DRESDEN, ON — Dresden Raceway wraps up its 2007 Ontario Sires Stakes program this Monday, Sept. 3 with seven Grassroots divisions for the impressive two-year-old pacing fillies.
Trainer Bob McIntosh will harness a pair of fillies in the $107,996 contest, Stonebridge Beauty from Post 8 in the fifth race and Stonebridge Nugget from Post 8 in the ninth.
Stonebridge Nugget heads to Dresden off a solid victory in the Aug. 22 Grassroots event at Flamboro Downs and has the added weapon of familiarity with Dresden’s half-mile oval in her arsenal. The daughter of Camluck and Trieste Hanover started her racing career in Dresden, finishing fifth in an Aug. 1 overnight and second on Aug. 15.
“Stonebridge Nugget is a nice type of filly. We’ve brought her along slow,” notes McIntosh. “I like her attitude; I really like her attitude. She leans forward and really tries hard.”
In her Flamboro victory Stonebridge Nugget ground her way up the outside to hit the wire a half-length on top in 1:58.3, and in both of her Dresden outings she also demonstrated some grit on the outside.
LaSalle resident McIntosh, breeder Angie Stiller of Arva and Dan Belliveau of Halifax, NS share ownership on Stonebridge Nugget, who will be piloted on Monday by two-time Lampman Cup winner Don McElroy.
McElroy will also steer Stonebridge Beauty, who has five starts under her belt at the midpoint in the Grassroots season. The daughter of Camluck and Casual Beauty made her debut at Flamboro Downs on July 20, where she finished second. Ten days later she tried her hand at Mohawk Racetrack and delivered a sixth-place effort.
At Clinton Raceway in the Aug. 5 Grassroots event, Stonebridge Beauty delivered an impressive second-place finish from the outside Post 7, then followed that up with a fourth-place finish at Mohawk on Aug. 13. In her second Grassroots start the filly got a bumpy tour around the Flamboro oval when she was interfered with early in the race, and finished a distant seventh.
“She’s a nice, big filly, a growthy big filly. I think she’ll be a better filly next year,” says McIntosh, “But if she’s close in the stretch she’ll be in there. She gets around a half easy, so that’s not going to slow her up.”
McIntosh, Stiller and Belliveau also own Stonebridge Beauty, a full sister to last fall’s three-year-old pacing colt Grassroots Champion Stonebridge Ideal, who has banked $199,402 in his career.
“Both of mine are just starting out,” says the veteran horseman. “They’re not at their peak performance yet, but hopefully they are working toward it. They’re not superstars, but they’re nice fillies.”
Post time for Dresden Raceway’s Labour Day Monday matinee is 1 pm, and the two-year-old pacing fillies will shine in Races 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 11.
