REXDALE, ON — Heading into Saturday evening’s $130,000 Gold Final at Woodbine Racetrack, driver Jody Jamieson had a notion that Mr Lemon might find his way to the front through the early stages of the race.

Not only did the three-year-old trotting colt find his way to the front, he found it before the first quarter and never relinquished the lead as he battled to a 1:59.2 victory over a sloppy track rated two seconds slower than normal.

As the starting gate accelerated away from the colts on the rain soaked oval, three of the Gold Final contestants were already off stride. With two of the colts to his inside on a break, Jamieson opted to power away from Post 7 and Mr Lemon easily reached the front with a :29.1 opening quarter. Through a 1:00.3 half and a 1:30.4 three-quarters, the gelding maintained his position on the front end and had enough in reserve to fight off a charge from runner-up Campbell Hall in the stretch.

Elimination winner Breaking Benjamin finished third, with King Covenant and elimination winner B Cor Rennegade picking up the last two Ontario Sires Stakes purse cheques. Favourite A Gentleman made a break heading toward the three-quarters and finished well back of the leader in eighth.

Dundas resident Jamieson shares ownership on Mr Lemon with Thomas Kyron of Etobicoke, William Jones of Lexington, KY and Benjamin Taylor of Nicholasville, KY. Carl Jamieson trains the Mr Lavec son, who improved his sophomore record to three wins and one second in six starts and almost doubled his lifetime earnings to $153,674.

Woodbine fans sent Mr Lemon off as their third choice and the gelding returned their investments with a $13.30 win pay out, a $7.00 place voucher and a $4.80 show pay out. Campbell Hall, the sixth choice, returned $8.20 to place and $5.70 to show, while eighth choice Breaking Benjamin’s show effort was worth $5.20. With the favourites left out of the action, the exactor returned $156.40 and the triactor was worth $1,569.50.

Mr Lemon will take a second stab at Gold Final glory on June 25, when the three-year-old trotting colts make the trip to the nation’s capital to compete over Rideau Carleton Raceway in their second Gold event of the season.

Woodbine Racetrack hosts its second Ontario Sires Stakes event of the season on Monday, June 12, welcoming the three-year-old pacing fillies for Gold Series Elimination action.
