FRASERVILLE, ON — Northern Kitti delivered the sharpest effort of the four two-year-old trotting filly Grassroots divisions hosted by Kawartha Downs on Tuesday afternoon.
The Dan Creighton trainee controlled the fourth $24,000 division from start to finish, accelerating away from Post 2 to a :29.3 opening quarter and carrying on through a 1:00 half, a 1:30.3 three-quarters and on to the 1:59.4 victory. Fan favourite Kenu Dance finished three and a half lengths back in second, with Your Word Is Good three more lengths to the rear in third.
Veteran reinsman Dave “Mr OSS” Wall engineered the Kadabra daughter’s victory for Creighton and his partners in the Danterra Racing Stable of Strathroy. Through five starts Northern Kitti has two wins, one second and two thirds for earnings of $31,310. Tuesday’s victory peeled one second off the filly’s former personal best, recorded in a Grassroots victory at Rideau Carleton Raceway, and boosted her Grassroots point total to 124. She heads back to Rideau Carleton for the Oct. 23 Grassroots Semifinal sitting sixth in the point standings.
Ipromisenottotell heads to Ottawa with a flawless record of three wins in three Grassroots starts after an impressive effort in the third division on Tuesday. Starting from Post 2, Ipromisenottotell made an early break and was sitting more than nine lengths off the pace when Charming Way reached the opening quarter in :59.3. Sixth by 10 lengths at the :59.3 half, Ipromisenottotell had advanced along the rail into third, just two and one-quarter lengths behind the leaders by the 1:30.3 three-quarters.
Turning for home Ipromisenottotell was positioned three lengths back in fifth, and when trainer-driver Joe Hudon asked for a burst of speed the filly responded, sprinting home to a three-quarter length victory in 2:00.4. Excellence was at the head of the crowd turning for home, but could not hold off Ipromisenottotell and had to settle for second, while Striking Bella closed well to finish third.
Hudon trains the talented Ipromisenottotell for R A W Equine Inc. of Milton, who have cheered the filly on to three wins in seven outings and earnings of $38,400. Tuesday’s victory boosted the filly’s point tally to 150 and sees her wrap up the regular season in third spot in the standings.
Photogenic Filly jumped into second spot in the point race with her 2:01.4 victory at Kawartha on Tuesday. The Malabar Maple miss got a classic pocket steer from Hall of Fame horseman Ron Waples, popping out from behind pacesetter Velten Ladolcevita in the stretch and accelerating away to a three length win. Taco closed hard to earn third-place honours.
Waples bred, owns and trains Photogenic Filly, who has three victories and two thirds to her credit through six freshman starts, all in the Grassroots program. The filly heads to Ottawa for the post season battles in second spot with 174 points.
Now Kronos and driver Sylvain Filion claimed the other division with a gritty performance up the outside to land a one-quarter length victory over pacesetter Pretty Amigo, halting the Kawartha teletimer at 2:03.1. Daylon Mission also powered up the outside to land the third-place cheque.
Reve Avec Moi Stable of Knowlton, QC leases Now Kronos, who boosted her freshman record to two wins, one second and one third in seven starts with the win. Tuesday’s win also propelled the Ken Warkentin daughter from twenty-fifth to eighth in the standings, earning her a shot at the Grassroots Semifinal.
The top 16 point earners head to Rideau Carleton Raceway on Oct. 23 for two Grassroots Semifinals, with the top four from each Semifinal earning an invitation to the $100,000 Grassroots Championship on Nov. 1.
Tuesday’s Grassroots skirmish wrapped up an outstanding Ontario Sires Stakes season for Kawartha Downs, which saw the Fraserville oval host four Grassroots events and two Gold Series events.
