FRASERVILLE, ON — Kawartha Downs wraps up an outstanding stretch of Ontario Sires Stakes racing on Tuesday with five Trillium Series divisions for the two-year-old trotting fillies.

Thirty top Gold and Grassroots Series competitors, along with eight of their American-bred peers, will compete for a total of $70,690 in their first Trillium Series event and Karen Debnam hopes that Gold Elimination winner Oaklea Omega can post another top finish in her third start of the season.

“It’s been a real surprise and shock and everything,” says Debnam, who shares ownership on Oaklea Omega with trainer John Bax of Peterborough, Brilo Farms of Sharon, Glenn Van Camp of Port Perry and her partner in the Venture K Stable, Kenneth James of Acton.

“It’s been just awesome, I have difficulty sleeping I get so excited,” adds the Little Britain resident with a chuckle.

The excitement started to build around Oaklea Omega when the Balanced Image daughter put together an impressive qualifier at Mohawk Racetrack on June 18, finishing third in 2:06.1 and trotting her last quarter in a smart :28.3.

In the season opening Gold event at Mohawk on July 5, Oaklea Omega and driver Dave Wall were sitting second when the leader made a break and pushed them into the pylons on the inside of the racetrack, but the filly never missed a step, trotting home to a half length victory in 2:00.2. Back at Mohawk for the July 11 Gold Final, Oaklea Omega finished third by a length and a three-quarters in a 1:58 mile.

“She trotted her last half just unbelievable. None of us figured out how fast she’d done it until we got home. And she never lost any space or lengths, she just did her thing,” says Debnam of the filly’s Gold Final effort. “It’s been a really pleasant surprise, hopefully she can stay that way.”

Debnam is looking forward to watching Oaklea Omega compete at her local oval and intends to treat her octogenarian parents to a night at the races and, with any luck a trip to the winner’s circle.

“Hopefully she gets around and does her thing. That would be really great for everyone,” says the owner. “There’s nothing like winning a race, or even just seeing your horse race well.”

Among the fillies Oaklea Omega will face on Tuesday are two Gold Series competitors and four who made their provincial debut in the Grassroots Series at Kawartha on July 12.

Post time for Kawartha Downs’ Tuesday program is 4 pm, and Peterborough resident Bax will harness one filly in each Trillium division. Sister Shirl will start from Post 1 in the first race, Oh Oh Oh gets Post 1 in Race 2, Oaklea Omega start from Post 3 in Race 4, Grassroots winner Gramola Grande makes her second start over the Kawartha oval from Post 4 in Race 6 and Oaklea Odessa wraps things up for the Bax stable from Post 1 in Race 7.
