SUDBURY, ON — Fabtowin made her racing debut a winning one, posting the fastest mile in three Trillium Series divisions at Sudbury Downs on Saturday evening.
The two-year-old trotting filly and driver Bill O’Donnell led the field through fractions of :32, 1:05.2 and 1:36.3 and then stayed game in the stretch, fending off the fast closing Windsong Darling to score a quarter length decision in 2:06.3. Fan favourites Windsong Darling and Trevor Henry settled for second and Jayportcashforlife finished seven lengths behind the leaders in third.
David Frey trains Fabtowin for Vaughn and Mark Marshall of Campbellville, who acquired the CR Renegade daughter from last fall’s Canadian Open Yearling Sale for a mere $1,700. Saturday’s victory returned the filly’s purchase price, plus more than $10,000 in interest.
O’Donnell made a second appearance in the Sudbury Downs winner’s circle with Caught My Eye after the eighth race. The veteran reinsman once again controlled the pace, steering the Angus Hall miss to her first lifetime victory in 2:07.4. H S Gingersnap and Trevor Henry were three lengths back in third and Armbro Eden rounded out the top three.
A significantly higher priced yearling, Caught My Eye set trainer Frank O’Reilly of Orton, and his partners John Fielding of Toronto and John Ferguson of Windsor, back $55,000 at the 2005 Forest City Yearling Sale.
The other Trillium Series division saw a pair of Henry trained fillies finish one-two. Tymal Timeout and Wayne Henry claimed top spot in the $24,713 contest, with stablemate Odee Tijana and Trevor Henry finishing six lengths behind in second. Green Machine was another length back in third.
Wayne Henry trains Tymal Timeout for his partners in the Henry Stable of Arthur and Daniel McCann of Parkhill. A $21,000 yearling acquisition, the Royal Strength miss is a full sister to former Henry trainee and $172,707 winner Lookit.
Henry started six freshman trotting fillies in Saturday’s Trillium event and hauled home one Grassroots trophy, three runner-up cheques and a pair of also rans.
The two-year-old trotting fillies will now head to Gold Series action at Flamboro Downs on July 1 or Grassroots action at Georgian Downs on July 4. They do not make their second Trillium Series start until Nov. 7 at Kawartha Downs.
Sudbury Downs continues its exceptional line up of Ontario Sires Stakes events on Saturday, July 22 when the two-year-old pacing fillies head to the northern oval for their second Grassroots challenge.
