The top two rookie pacing colts in the Ontario Sires Stakes last season are among the 72 still eligible to Canada’s richest harness race, the $1 Pepsi North America Cup. In total there are 13 Ontario breds still eligible to the race which will take place on June 20 at Mohawk.
Reverend Hanover, the leading money winner in his OSS division last season, is among the group. The son of Sportswriter made only four starts last season and won all four, two Gold divisions and the OSS Super Final. He earned a total of $218,500 for owners West Wins Stable of Cambridge, Steve Calhoun of Chatham and Anthony Beaton of Waterdown, Ontario.
The leading highest money winner in the same OSS category last year was Drachan Hanover. The Jeremes Jet colt finished second in the Super Final and won a total of $140,000 in the OSS program and $157,000 in total last season for owners Lloyd MacLean and Kenneth Rankin of Nova Scotia.
O’Brien Award finalist and Battle of Waterloo winner Go Daddy Go is also among the NA Cup eligibles. The son of Ponder who won over $398,000 last season will look to give his trainer, breeder and co-owner Bob McIntosh his second NA Cup title. Thinking Out Loud, another son of Ponder, gave McIntosh his first Cup in 2012.
Also on the list is Bring On The Beach, a full brother to one of the best Ontario breds of all time, Somebeachsomewhere. A winner of more than $3.3 million in his career, Somebeachsomewhere captured the 2011 NA Cup. Purchased for $155,000 as a yearling, Bring On The Beach is owned by Mardon Farms of Loretto and Paradox Farm of Caledon East, Ontario and Daniel MacIsaac of PEI. The colt was not raced last year at two.
Another royally bred colt is Mikes Powerhouse, a son of Camluck whose dam has produced winners of more than $4.7 million including the colt’s full siblings Michaels Power, a $1.7 million winner, and Michelles Power, who earned $1.3 million in her carer. Owned by breeder Jeff Snyder of New York, Mikes Powerhouse was an OSS Grassroots winner last year at Grand River Raceway.
