HANOVER, ON — Hanover Raceway fans will get their money’s worth of Ontario Sires Stakes excitement on Saturday night when ten Grassroots divisions for the three-year-old pacing colts roll in behind the starting gate.
Joining the colts who competed in the Grassroots season opener at Elmira Raceway on May 20 are some newcomers to the Ontario Sires Stakes scene, including Clarence Beitz trainee Voices Carry. The Armbro Operative son has just two starts under his belt after missing his two-year-old season with a bad knee and Beitz is hoping he can make up for lost time starting Saturday.
“He’s only raced twice and he won both times, but it was just against non-winners of $3,000,” says Beitz, who bred and owns the pacer. “I’ve always liked him, but we’ll know better what he can do after Saturday night.”
The colt comes into the race off a pair of victories at his local oval where he gapped the field, finishing six lengths ahead of the competition in 1:59.4 on June 8 and nine lengths to the good in a 1:59.2 effort on June 22.
Voices Carry will start from Post 4 in Race 6 with Hanover regular Jim McClure taking over driving duties from Larry Hughes, who will be in Sudbury to compete in an OSS event. Beitz thinks the colt will find the mid-field post to his liking, but adds that his speed off the gate has yet to be tested.
“He has never been in any tough competition to see what he can leave,” says the Mildmay resident. “We’ll see how he does.”
Voices Carry will face off against five OSS veterans and two other first time starters in Race 6.
Among the colts who need no introduction to Ontario Sires Stakes fans is last year’s Grassroots champion Corona Grande, who will attempt to stretch his Grassroots win streak to eight from Post 4 in the fifth race. The winner of $113,361 has not been bested since his debut on the provincial stage as a two-year-old.
The Camluck colt heads into Saturday night’s contest off a seventh-place finish in the Hiawatha Horse Park Clearwater Cup, where he was beaten by just over two lengths in a 1:51.3 effort. Jack Darling of Windsor trains Corona Grande for his partner Dan Smith of Dorchester.
Hanover Raceway sends its first race behind the gate at 7:20 pm on Saturday night and the three-year-old pacing colts will impress fans in Races 2 though 11.
